What would you want to find if you were the guest? Definitely try spending at least one night and a day there, figure out what you would need to feel comfortable. What level of comfort? Basic? Middle ground? Pampered? What is our reason for the stay, as a guest? Imagine yourself as them, and then have fun building a space for them to use and enjoy!

@Regina911 If a guest is on a longer stay their room gets cleaned and it gets fresh linens.

Also when they check in the room is in pristine condition with fresh sheets and fresh towels , lit candle, water bottles, fruit basket . I also provide a welcome meal - whatever they prefer - dinner or a Sunday early breakfast. The bathroom has spa like items - bubble bath, fragrant soaps, white bathrobe, disposable slip ons, massage oil , extra towels , candles.

@Regina911   NO TO CANDLES.....Not all guests are good about using candles.  They are a fire hazard in the hands of some people.  If you wish to provide a "candle-lite" atmosphere, use LED candles please.

We have a regulation on no open flames anywhere on the property due to year round fire safety needs and local ordinances. We have battery operated candles of several sizes for those guests who would want that amenity. They are easily located online for purchase. They also do not blow out if used outdoors on the porch! We also avoid anything scented, which is a default for guests, many of whom would react negatively to fragrances

Thanks for sharing your tips @Rj212 , this thread has some interesting recommendations!

How do you decide which welcome meal to provide? Do you usually ask guests for their preferences before arrival, or do you have a set menu they choose from?

as it is a free meal I am providing - I usually tell the guest what I will be making -generally crepes or French toast and mimosa for breakfast or a nice Indian meal. Most guests are super happy to get a home cooked meal either on arrival or later in the week . Just like to do something extra special as a host

The majority of our stays are 1 week or less.  When they arrive, they have clean linens on the beds, two towel sets (bath towel, face towel, washcloth) for each bathroom.  They have fresh soap, fresh shampoo and conditioner, and fresh hand lotion.  They have 2 rolls of paper towels, 2 rolls of toilet tissue per bathroom, small liquid dish soap,  dishwasher pods and laundry pods.  The intent is to have a starter kit of expendables.  We have a fully equipped kitchen.   I keep spices, sugar, tea, coffee, oils, etc for their use.  I don't do a welcome package or provide any food or alcohol - that hasn't really been an expectation.  Personally, I have enjoyed having some snacks at places I have stayed but that is hard for me to do with my rental.

Hi @Robert8035 , since you’ve noticed that snacks and welcome packages haven’t really been an expectation with your current setup, do you instead share a list of recommended local shops, bakeries, or markets in your welcome information for guests?

Hi.  Yes we do have a list of recommended food markets and stores that are nearby.  We also have descriptions for recommended restaurants that we like.  Of course we supply a starter kit including soaps, shampoo, conditioner, paper products, etc. so the guest won't have to go to the store as soon as they arrive.  I wouldn't mind having a few snacks available for the guest when they get in but it's hard on my cleaning team.

I see @Robert8035 ~ it sounds like you’re already doing a fantastic job welcoming guests! 😍

How often do you update the restaurant recommendations for guests? Do you have a favourite? 😉

@Regina911  In addition to the normal things you would expect to find, guests really appreciate cleaning supplies such as an all purpose cleaners, Windex, mop, broom and or a vacuum cleaner.  We are dog friendly, so this really helps.
