Attention hosts! Please feel free to share your tips and experiences. I do want to hear from you!
1. Do bed frames have any effect on your guests sleep?
2. What tips can you give hosts for finding the perfect bed frame?
3. What is the best and quietest bed frames ( for example, metal, wood, upholstered, adjustable)?
Follow the industry standard: bed base+ mattress.
This is the cheapest, safest, long-lasting, quiet, flexible and reliable thing for any accommodation place, no matter of it's location, type, price or size.
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do". It's too late for us to invent the hot water. Someone already did it-long ago.
@Dimitar0 Thanks for replying!
There is such a wide selection of mattress..spring, hybrid, foam and latex it is like buying an automobile.
What to choose?
I chose a hybrid type- pocket springs+ memory foam, double sided mattress (winter/summer side).
100% natural latex is also good, but you have to be very careful with them- too many counterfeits.
The old type of spring mattress (bonnell type) is still in use around the world, they are very cheap, but completely "out of fashion" -too heavy, noisy, and because of the free space inside- just a heaven for the bed bugs.
@Dimitar0 Thank you that is a lot of valuable information. So much to try! But I agree with:
Spring mattress = not good.
Why don’t you read up on some of the credible review sites. In the UK we use Which and consumer reviews in national newspapers tend to be reliable
@Helen0 Thanks for your tip about reading reviews.
That is one of many steps. And a good start. Thank you.
But the next is real world step.
At the end of the day, what do hosts end up purchasing for their guests?
As a Host / Cleaner :
Choose a bed Without a Bed end - difficultly in tucking in the excess bedding
As a Guest:
My number 1 rule is comfort.
- Choose a bed where the guest can sit up while in bed.
- Headboard has been too low
- If it has Metal bars ensure the pillows provided give extra support ( not thin and flimsy)
- No Headboard - Bed has moved away from wall
I agree with @Sue714 about the comfort thing. I have been using big firm pillows called FJÄDRAR from Ikea for years. They are not expensive at all and great for comfort if you want to sit up and read, watch netflix etc. My bed/matress is also Ikea and I have got so many compliments. Also people asking for the brand. Ps. I do not work for Ikea 😉
@Sandra0 Thanks for you observation. You can tell I am exploring the double bed scenario : )
You are correct about the Ikea. I tried some of their bedroom offerings at their store the other day, and I was astonished! It was good!
Which matress is it ??? X
@Sue714 Thank you! I found your comments about "without a bed end interesting. Thanks for pointing that out!
But for the host, what type of mattress to get? Is there a average that guests prefer?
@Harold75 I have a bed base & mattress for my guests (and also the same set up for my personal bed). Quicker & easier to re-make the bed. I'm not a fan headboards as if they're the wrong height it is so uncomfortable to sit up, and if it'd a fabric headboard I wonder how well it's cleaned between guests.
@Rachel177 Thanks for the tips!
I was under the impression you need headboards. Having said that, I agree with you. Let me add,
Fabric headboards raise issues related to health and cleanliness.
@Harold75 I prefer foam mattresses and use one for myself as well. What I use is 4" of firm foam with a 2" softer topper. Then of course the mattress pad over all. My guests have said the bed is super comfortable (I've slept there myself sometimes, always a good thing for a host to do). This is on a simple wooden frame with no foot board and a wooden headboard.
What I like about the foam is that it's light and easy to move if need be. I'd stay away from any upholstery on the bed frame- too hard to clean, could get snagged and ripped, and could be a haven for bed bugs.
As long as you don't have wall-to wall carpet, put some felt pads or some other type of sliders under the feet of the bed- it's so much easier to clean when you can just slide the bed over, rather than having to vacuum underneath.
