I understand that Airbnb is going to target white nationalists with bannings.

How do you determine who is a nationalist?  Who on your staff makes that call?  What is the level of evidence that would be required?  Do you intend on also targeting radical Islamist, ANTIFA, Chinese who support their repressive government, on and on...?

I think if you intend to engage in such a program it would be wise to layout your rules in a fairhanded manner.  One in which certain groups would not feel targeted.

Thanks in advance.

Are you a white nationalist? Why does it bother you?

I think its extremely concerning that certain groups are being targeted and not others.  Who at Airbnb was responsible for determining what guests were there to march on the far left, far right, or in the middle?  How did they determine their motivations?  Did they google search names to find political motivations?

Are you not at all concerned about such a scenario?

I asked a question that I was asked.  Since I could not find the answer, I turned to the Airbnb Community to see if anyone else knew the answer.   I believe that if you don't know an answer or can't find it after researching, go to the nearest source.  It is much better than giving out false information.

Looking at this action neutrally and imagining a host taking such action - wow, it would be labelled discrimination. I find such developments especially disconcerting after Airbnb forced antidiscrimination on us to accept everyone and all with no difference or preference.

Now they are determining who is 'bad'? got to be kidding!. This is an incredibly dangerous double-sided sword. Today it's directed towards 'others', tomorrow another might have this same right to judge and turn the sword on 'you'.

And what about bookings by violent elements on the left? Certainly not darlings there either and just as bad and wrong as those on the extreme right. Do they lose their bookings too to create a level playing ground? How is this even checked by ABB?

Using the same 5-star system on who is to be cancelled? This is walking such a thin line, and ABB as intermediary between host and guest deciding on who is far-right or only middle or mild right and may or may not keep their booking is wrong. I only see problems and badly burnt fingers. Wait... oh my...  if I vaguely remember my history lessons right, then donning the cap of both judge and jury was in fact what fascists did..... or socialist communists...

I agree. Much of this is concerning to me as well.

@Stephen231  White nationalists are hate groups. That makes them different from any other groups. Look up the Nazis. They are the same and I am glad that Airbnb is banning anyone associated with these groups, hosts and guests alike, I hope.

Monica, white people are people that are light of color in skin, and nationalists are people who prioritize the citizens and policies of their own nation over those of other nations (we would call this rational self interest in some circles).

The negative connotation after that is opinion, not fact.  Half the voting population of the United States of America voted for Donald Trump, on the MAGA policies he sold to the public. Half. That pretty much makes half the voting population of USA 'nationalist' at this point.  If you are following the inernational news, many public leaders of other countries have now made very clear their position is in face 'Nationalist.'

Do you feel hating half the people of an entire country is morally better than being more concerned about your own country?  That is what we are comparing here.

The Aryan brotherhood is a white nationalist organization, so is the Klan. We are only white if there is someone around to be the person of color, otherwise we self identify as something else. I'm of Welsh extraction myself.

The rise in nationalist sentiment in nations is historically a predictor of war. We have alienated our allies, has that really been in our self interest? Is Saudi Arabia going to stand with us if we are spatting with China?

The trumped up claim of millions of people committing voter fraud & denying our thin skinned president  the popular vote turned out to be totally phony, in spite of a very well funded attempt to find proof. He won the electoral vote only & the margins in several states were very thin . He is unpopular with the majority of voters. There were indeed several voting scandals in the South but they were perpetrated by the RNC.  The fiascos in Wisconsin & Georgia were brought about by the Republicans in charge. The Republican game plan is to suppress the vote in every area they think they may lose. (Utah does vote by mail exclusively by the way, it's much cheaper)    That is not the way a democracy is meant to work, is it?

California has a population larger than that of 21 of the "white heartland" states. We are the biggest contributor to the national economy but our voice in the senate has no more weight than that of North Dakota. The so called heartland states write the laws, if the results are causing economic havoc, health crises and other woes that are increasing the flow of populations away from the heartland there's nothing we can do about it.The diverse coastal states are economically & culturally powerful and the population  but we don't have the political power.

Hi guys - I read these post and I realized nor Airbnb - nor people NOT  living in a racist country can decide what is good or bad. I can just smile on the wisdom. Any form of extreme is a danger to all. I have experience white, black, political and religion extremist - nothing good come from that. Don't even try to label one group, you will just get stuck in the next one. The only solution is if a guest or host is reported for these activities - remove them individually from the platform.

Someone told me they saw on a news channel that Airbnb gave $100,000 to Antifa and radical leftist groups.

Does anyone know if this is true or not?

If it was Faux news, no I wouldn't believe it for a minute, it is true that some folk who identify themselves with "Antifa" a very loosely organized group indeed, participated in the marches that were affiliated with Black Lives Matter. Antifa is not Black Lives Matter and the destructive antics by some people who call themselves Antifa are a source of dismay & frustration for those who believe in the power of peaceful demonstration.

As Antifa is meant to be an anarchistic movement i don't even see how they could have a spokesperson to accept a corporate donation.  I am trying not to generalize but the ones I have observed seem to be a mix of entitled trustafarian wanna be revolutionaries who enjoy the adrenaline rush of destroying someone else's neighborhood & right wing agent provocateurs who are doing the same thing. The one place they never showed up was during the women's marches, just saying.

Good to know.  Thanks.

@Priscilla150  The term "antifa" simply means anti-fascist. I believe it originated during WWII in Italy referring to those fighting fascist forces. There is no organization or group called "Antifa". Rather it is a movement and a mind-set that is committed to fighting fascism wherever it rears its ugly head.

Be careful of falling for propaganda designed to rile people up. Do your own research.

Good advise.  Thanks.
