Can I ask how you define is 'top contributor' - one mentioned here has made only seven posts. @Rebecca  and less than a hundred replies .

I would imagine there are many who post here who have made that sort of contribution 😀

Hello @Helen3  👋

Fair question. We're very confident all the hosts in this group deserve the title Top Contributor – we've done a very thorough review! Bear in mind all content matters, both discussions started and replies.

It's the quality of the advice what matters to be a Top Contributor, not the quantity. Some hosts hit both, quality and quantity! Some might be a little less active but their post are very meaningful.

Hope that helps clarify a bit. 😊

@Helen3  I'm shocked to hear that quality of advice matters. There are many who respond all the time and don't contribute much substance at all. Definitely not "amazing" content. (not referring to you, by any means)

The whole thing is a construct. Why create a division between all contributors and "top" contributors? Silly. If AirBnB had better customer service, they wouldn't be as dependent on the free advice served up here. It's not hard to see why this is promoted as a thing.

Hi @Kia272 ,

You bring up an interesting perspective.

In my region (Scandinavia), we’ve often discussed how ranking systems can have unintended effects. Research in positive psychology, such as studies by Hans Henrik Knoop from Aalborg University, Denmark, shows that systems based on top ratings tend to only motivate those who receive the highest recognition. For others, missing out on "top marks" can be demotivating and reduce their willingness to contribute further.

Applied to Airbnb's "Top Contributor" system, there’s a real risk that active contributors—like those at Level 10, whose contributions have clearly brought value to this community—might feel less inclined to engage if they don’t receive recognition. Instead of fostering more participation, it could unintentionally discourage those who aren’t highlighted.

At the same time, recognition does have its merits—and I must admit, it’s a bit embarrassing to say. Being recognized as a "Top Contributor" has motivated me to engage more actively, even though I often feel too busy to participate. That said, I can easily imagine feeling the opposite if I’d received a "lower score" this time, so to speak. And it’s truly thought-provoking to consider if all the incredibly inspiring people in this community—regardless of their level—who I learn from every time I come here, might feel the same way.

This raises an important question: how can the system ensure that all contributors feel valued and motivated to continue sharing their insights and experiences?

Best regards,
Karen

@Karen4131  I agree and appreciate your thoughtful perspective. It's very obvious to me that all of this promotion about contributing in the CC is because it's free help for AirBnB, and is replacing the employees they should be hiring to offer support to both guests and hosts. It's a cost-saving measure without a doubt. Hence, the ego boost that comes with being a top contributor, in the hopes of perpetuating the contributions.

The mods keep calling out the "top" contributors, so it's a manipulated-perpetuating cycle of cost savings for AirBnB.

Many non-top contributors contribute regularly and meaningfully. Many "top" contributors often offer incomprehensible and bad advice. Many former "top" contributors were banned from the CC. I'm happy to hang at the sidelines and offer my own thoughts, not needing a prompt from the mods. In fact, if they ever (rarely) call me out, I'm not likely to respond. I won't contribute to a meaningless system created solely to save AirBnB money.

You Scandinavians are always way ahead in everything, particularly in social research and happiness!

Hi @Kia272 ,

Thank you for your perspective. I agree that the system has its flaws and can feel like a cost-saving strategy. Recognizing all contributors, not just a select few, would likely foster a stronger and more inclusive community.

I also just had a look at your listing—wow, what a place! It’s clear that skill and dedication truly matter there. Top one percent... now that’s recognition to be proud of, right?

And as for Scandinavians being ahead—well, we try! Though I think we’re mostly just good at marketing our happiness. 😉

Best regards,
Karen

@Karen4131 How very kind of you! I've been very lucky- I'm an onsite host, so guests don't get much of an opportunity to cause trouble on my property.

Recognizing all contributors, not just a select few, would likely foster a stronger and more inclusive community.

I couldn't agree more.

As to your beautiful place, as soon as I can get this retirement thing going I'll be over to stay. I've spent a bit of time in Denmark, but never made it across the strait to Sweden.

I feel like we hijacked this thread, but hey, no harm, right? Cheers

@Kia272

Interesting that you’ve been to Denmark. I’m actually Danish, but I live in Sweden because the nature here is more vast and beautiful. - You’re always welcome 🙂

And yes, it seems we went a bit off track in this conversation. - But it was delightful. Take care.

Hello @Rebecca

I'm not on the list, does that mean I've lost my title?!

I'm very sorry @Joelle43, I missed your name in all the excitement of congratulating you all and because you're also announced in the French Community Center.

I have amended the list here though - congratulations again! 🎉

Thank you @Rebecca 😍 To be honest, the anglophone CC is much busier than the French one and being bilingual I love the fact that I can switch from one to the other😂  I've learnt so much here thanks to the other great hosts
