Energy bill $439

Hi,

We are new to hosting and have a tenant in our condo for the month of January.   I just received the energy bill and the cost went from $109 in Dec.  to $439 in Janaury.    Has anyone had something this extreme happen to them?

@Marie7366 I think many hosts are totally unprepared for the cost of utility bills when they ent out their homes. We find that we have to heat to 22/23 degrees C to make the apartments comfortable which is significantly higher than we run our house. Also guests just don't care about heating/cooling often leaving windows/doors open. Unless you have a smart system that can switch off heating/cooling if windows are open you just have to ensure any likely costs are fully covered in your rent. Sadly some hosts have no idea what their rental costs them per week over a year so charge way to low a nightly rate.

@Marie7366  Renting long term will usually cost more in terms of utilities. Short term guests are usually out and about a lot of the time, long termers stay home, blast the heat or AC all day, may be working from home all day, with myriad devices plugged in, are cooking more at home, etc.
