Scam alert! How can I make sure a listing is real?

This will be my first time using Airbnb so I'm a bit weary about listings being fake.

What can I do to make sure a listing is real and not a scam?

What should I be looking out for?

Thanks

Welcome to Airbnb!

Here are a few things you can do to make sure the listing is real:

(1) Look at the reviews and make sure they seem to talk about the same place you are booking

(2) If the listing says anything about contacting the host outside of Airbnb before booking, DO NOT - this is a well-known scam.

(3) Look at the listing - if it seems "too good to be true" (aka luxurious penthouse for a super low rate) it probably is!

Hi

im looking for a place in London in summer. Came across this excellent property. Looks like it is new on market and from individual without other properties. There are no reviews yet.  Is it a legitimate property? Here’s the link from my AirBnB app.

Hi

Just caught a scammer.

I was looking for a flat to rent long term in Oxford. There was a nice 2 beds  flat on gumtree

Women called Clare (07487 888072) texted me saying that her dad was responsible for the booking.

The email was veriermichael22@gmail.com.

I made contact with him. He told me he was in spain for work. He send me a airbnb link via email to book his flat (big red flag there)

Once I booked, i received a PDF invoice from airnbn ( another big red flag).

The name on the account was a different person and the transfert was to a bank in spain. He also said i was going to get the keys delivered to my current adress by a airbnb agent COME ON ! ( final redflag)

I blocked him straight away.

If it feel dodgy, it probably is.

Airbnb dont do long term rent agreement where you can just book yourself for 2 years .

Hello! This person has been on Airbnb since 1/2018, zero reviews, beautiful space below-market for the neighborhood in London. Fake?

@Maggie294  It's very difficult for any one to be able to tell you if a listing is "fake" if it is on the official Airbnb site. The ones that are definitely scams use URLs which look at first glance like airbnb, but are not, they are always slightly different, and the scammers are good at making the site it takes you to look like an Airbnb page.

This is on the official Airbnb site. It is marked "new", which is why it wouldn't have any reviews yet, and also why they may be offering discounts in order to attract their first guests and reviews.

The date when a user joined Airbnb is immaterial. That doesn't mean they've had a listing since then, all it means is that they opened an account, which anyone can do. I've had guests who had been members since 2017 and didn't have one review. When I asked them about this, they said they'd joined, but never actually used it. Or they'd stayed a couple places, but their hosts hadn't bothered to leave a review. They all turned out to be great guests.

If a place is on the official Airbnb site, just send an Inquiry message to the host. Ask any questions you have, and see if you get a response which sets your mind at ease or sends up red flags. Message back and forth a couple times if you need to. Just because Instant Book is available, doesn't mean you shouldn't try to connect with a host before committing yourself to book somewhere.

All new guests start out with no reviews, just as all new hosts start out with no reviews. It's always good to be cautious, but communication between host and guest is key.

Hi, I have used Airbnb a bunch of times all with really great experiences.

Lately I have heard some horror stories about fake listings and am feeling a bit concerned over this property. Here is the link https://abnb.me/Vrd4DNeUGW

if anyone can comment or has an idea if this is a safe listing to book with.

As as I have booked it but am feeling worried over one comment on their second listing, not many reviews and have not gotten a response when requested to book like I have with the other places I plan to visit during this time

Check out this listing on Airbnb, Big Bang for your bucks

Is this legitimate?

What about this listing? The host has ten properties but zero reviews... Any advice?

@Rachel981 this does not seem like a legitimate listing to me. Did you contact the host? There are no Airbnb agents that give keys. I would suggest typing Airbnb.com on youw browser and search for listings that have more reviews and not misleading as the probably fake ones on this listing. If it is too good to be true then it probably is.

@Rachel981 Posting of personal info here, like your email, will be removed by the moderators.

The URL you posted is a fake Airbnb site. These are scammers. Stop communicating with them and don't give them any of your personal information. If you are looking for an Airbnb listing, look on the official website, not contact people who post on some other site and send you emails about renting their place.

Hello,

Is it possible to check if this listing is legit before I book it?

The hosts said to send them an email before booking as they have problems updating the calendar on Airbnb. They said that they reserved the dates on their calendar and have requested for Airbnb to email me with an invoice and payment details which will be sent to me within 24hours.

I‘m concerned that the price is very cheap for such a nice villa but they advised that this house had just finished construction and 2019 was its first renting season so prices are promotional in order to attract customers and gain reviews.

I‘m not sure if they are scamming me but I haven’t paid yet.

heres the link: https://abnb.me/FmnTSAj2QW

They are 100% scamming you, @Jemma19. This has nothing to do with Airbnb. They are only using the name to make it sound legitimate. I have no plans to click on that link, but it is clear it is not an Airbnb URL.

Don't pay them anything.
