Hi @Ni-Nyoman-Sukadi0 , thank you so much for sharing more about Bendigo ๐ Your love for the city truly shines through your wonderful comment.
I am always up for tram tours and historic European-style architecture, and assume tourists enjoy such local attractions too.
What have you enjoyed the most when exploring Melbourne though? Do you have any recommendations for tourists? ๐

Honestly, some of the Chinese restaurants in Melbourne are the best in the world! Highly recommend.
Also, for a fascinating tour of the history and menus of Chinese restaurants across regional Australia, there is a gorgeous podcast by our national broadcaster (ABC), presented by Jennifer Wong: https://iview.abc.net.au/show/chopsticks-or-fork
Jennifer has also written a book of the same title.

@Bhumika There are several reasons why Melbourne has been at the top of the most live able cities in the world for Yonkers.
Itโs the food, itโs the farmers markets within a stones throw of the city. Itโs not just a choice of one or two options but world city specific cuisine. Itโs not Chinese food, itโs real Hunan food, that comparison goes on, and on, and on. It is the same for Italian, Argentinian and Thai to name very few.
Itโs the melting pot that works. Itโs a great place to get out and explore. The example you mention of Hosier lane and the National Gallery are great examples. But kind of like other big cities getting lost in the true diversity of the cityscape is what itโs all about. Finding a cute coffee shop on your walk to the Queen Victoria market, or dropping in for an indigenous walk at federation square, or heading to Italian on Lygon street for dinner at Jhonny, Vince and Sammyโs before a delectable dessert at Brunettes.
The weather is the best so totally unpredictable there is not point trying, just wear what you want. Every now and then it will result in great fashion walking the streets.
Beyond the nooks and crannies, you notice when youโre here, everything is nice, mostly looked after, and for a city busy, but also calm.
Actually, itโs one of the best places in this beautiful country. So please come and stay a while, meet some locals (most donโt bite), and discover the million things to do here, to find and explore.
Then, just like others here, you can discover all the wonderful places to go off the beaten track and venture out of town (where a car is a must for true exploration).
Come and discover this amazing city.

@Bhumika One of the best ways to explore Melbourneโs CBD is through the cityโs free tram zone. Trams are free within the Central Business District, so you can hop on and off as you explore the central areas without needing a ticket. If youโre heading outside this area, pick up a Myki card, available at most train stations and some convenience stores.
The charm of Melbourneโs laneways and arcades is not to be missed. Hosier Lane is a must-see for street art, while Degraves Street offers an array of cafes hidden away from the bustling streets. Block Arcade is full of beautiful architecture and unique boutiques. Venturing just a bit outside the city, spots like Abbotsford Convent offer peaceful grounds filled with cafes, art studios, and gardens, all in a converted convent that feels worlds away from the cityโs pace.
Melbourne weather is famously unpredictable. Locals say you can experience four seasons in a day, so layering is key. This way, you can comfortably adapt to whatever the skies bring. A small umbrella is always a good idea for sudden showers.
For a taste of Melbourneโs food culture, a visit to the cityโs markets is essential. The Queen Victoria Market offers a bustling atmosphere with everything from fresh produce to local specialties. Prahran Market and South Melbourne Market are perfect for sampling specialty foods, fresh seafood, and gourmet goods. These markets capture Melbourneโs diverse culinary scene and provide a chance to experience the cityโs vibrant food culture.
The coffee culture here is iconic. Melbourne has a strong reputation for specialty coffee, and the cafes do not disappoint. Wander the laneways to discover hidden gems, or visit popular spots like Market Lane Coffee, Seven Seeds, and Proud Mary. Melbourneโs baristas are known for their dedication to quality, and youโll find locals who are more than willing to chat about their favorite brews.
Dining at peak times can mean long waits at Melbourneโs popular restaurants, as many donโt take reservations. A good tip is to visit early or dine outside peak hours. Many hidden gems, like Carltonโs bluestone laneways, also offer quieter, charming spots to eat, where you can often discover delicious food with fewer crowds.
For sunset views, head to St Kilda Pier, where you can watch the sun dip over Port Phillip Bay. If youโre there at dusk, look out for the penguin colony that returns to the rocks in the evening, particularly in warmer months. The sight of the city skyline with the sunset as a backdrop makes for a memorable evening.
If youโre a fan of art, Melbourneโs CBD and surrounding areas are filled with public art installations. Federation Square and Southbank have sculptures and murals, with notable pieces like the โYellow Perilโ sculpture in the Arts Precinct. William Ricketts Sanctuary in the Dandenong Ranges is a more secluded art escape. The sanctuary features intricate clay sculptures celebrating Aboriginal culture, surrounded by lush forest for a peaceful, reflective experience.
Day trips beyond Melbourne add another layer to your visit. For a scenic adventure, Hanging Rock in the Macedon Ranges offers dramatic rock formations and trails that provide sweeping views. The Yarra Valley Chocolaterie offers a delicious escape with free chocolate tastings and scenic views of the valley. The Yarra Valley itself is a beautiful destination for wine tours and vineyard visits, while Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsula offers rugged coastal walks and the iconic Cape Schanck Lighthouse.
Heading west, the Silo Art Trail in the Wimmera-Mallee region turns old grain silos into huge canvases, showcasing murals that capture the spirit of local communities. The trail is a testament to rural Victoriaโs creativity and makes for a unique road trip. Further north, Turpins Falls near Kyneton offers a secluded rock pool surrounded by cliffs, ideal for swimming in warmer weather. For an artful escape closer to the city, the Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen features contemporary art exhibits and lush gardens, set within a former artistsโ haven.
For a historical glimpse, visit La Trobeโs Cottage in Melbourne, where Victoriaโs first governor lived. It provides a fascinating look into colonial life, as does Como House in South Yarra, a historic mansion blending Italianate and Australian design, with gardens and preserved rooms to explore. Another unusual find is Cooksโ Cottage in Fitzroy Gardensโa cottage brought over from England in the 1930s and thought to belong to Captain James Cookโs parents.
Natural wonders nearby include Steavenson Falls in Marysville, one of Victoriaโs tallest waterfalls, which is lit up at night for a magical experience. Organ Pipes National Park near Melbourne is another geological marvel, with its natural basalt columns shaped like organ pipes by ancient volcanic activity. For more coastline beauty, Point Lonsdale Lighthouse on the Bellarine Peninsula is a quiet retreat with stunning beaches, excellent fishing spots, and even lighthouse climbs for panoramic views.
For a quirky shopping experience, check out Wunderkammer on Lonsdale Street. This unique shop feels like a museum, filled with taxidermy, antique medical instruments, and rare curiosities. The Nicholas Building on Swanston Street is also a hidden treasure, housing small galleries, workshops, and vintage stores within an iconic Art Deco space.
Melbourne is full of surprises, both within the city and in the scenic regions nearby. From exploring hidden laneways to discovering the natural beauty and cultural treasures of regional Victoria, this city invites you to embrace its hidden gems. Whether youโre sipping coffee in a quiet cafe, marveling at street art, or standing before dramatic coastal cliffs, Melbourne offers countless ways to enjoy its unique blend of urban energy and regional charm.

Panusila Hot Spring is my favorite place to visit near Melbourne, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and natural beauty. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this hot spring feels like a secluded paradise away from the cityโs hustle and bustle. The mineral-rich waters, naturally heated by geothermal activity, provide a soothing experience, and are known for their therapeutic benefitsโgreat for unwinding tense muscles and promoting circulation. Surrounded by scenic landscapes, the area has a tranquil ambiance thatโs ideal for an escape, whether youโre going solo, with family, or on a romantic getaway. The pools vary in temperature, so thereโs something for everyone, and the facilities are thoughtfully designed to make the experience comfortable. Early mornings or evenings are particularly magical times to visit, as you can often enjoy the peaceful setting with fewer people around. Panusila Hot Spring is truly a hidden gem, combining the healing power of nature with a beautiful setting, and itโs a spot I always recommend to visitors looking for a unique, relaxing experience near Melbourne.

The address at 140 Springs Lane, Fingal VIC 3939, leads to the Peninsula Hot Springs, a popular geothermal hot spring on the Mornington Peninsula. Itโs about a 90-minute drive from Melbourne CBD (around 110 km), and I recommend going by car since public transport options are limited and involve multiple transfers. Discounts are often available for visits before 9 am or during off-peak hours, so checking their website or calling ahead can help you find the best rates.
