I gave a scammer an address for the money

Yup.  After yet another Homeaway/VRBO inquiry that said the guest's company was taking care of the payment, so they could only send a company or certified check, I wrote back:

"Sure, you can send a check for $5,000 to:

You're a Scammer

Go F*** Yourself, NY  00000."

And I wasn't even drunk.

@Susan151  You always make me laugh too hard to write.

@Ann72 . So I am sitting here with little to do, so I have culled some addresses for you to consider in the future:

Holding Cell C, Room 1001, 75-20 Astoria Blvd., East Elmhurst , NY 11370

Scammers Corner,  Seventh Ave. and 32nd St., New York, NY 10001

Detective in Charge, 26 Federal Plaza, New York, NY 10278

Go have a cocktail. Rumor is the "Sun will Come Out Tomorrow!"

@Susan151  Fell asleep laughing to this one.

Is there really a Scammers Corner in my fair city?  As the address is right by Penn Station, where there are a lot of easy marks wandering around, it makes sense, but I've never heard of it!

I'll CC the Detective in Charge on my next missive.  🙂

Nope. I just thought that Penn Station was a good address to use for such a reply along with Rikers and the FBI. Silly stuff, I know.

@Susan151 Oh, well done!  You nailed it.  And I've learned that you have to be held in Astoria before you get to visit Rikers Island.  Rikers has an average 3.2 star review (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Rikers+Island/@40.7920528,-73.8905395,15z/data=!4m7!3m6!1s0x89c2f5...) - I'm sure that if we took it over and ran it as an Airbnb we could get that rating up.

@Ann72  so how is this scam actually working?

@Branka-and-Silvia0 How do email scams ever work?  I can only guess that greed, desperation, stupidity, and wild hope play a part.  On both sides.

As to how it works in practice, I think they send you a cashier's check for more than the total and ask you to wire the balance back to them.  Then the check bounces.  It's an old one, so it either still works some of the time, or scammers are just going through an old copy of Scamming for Dummies and trying it out.
