Will cancellation clock reset if I alter a guest's reservation?

I have a guest asking to add 2 people (i charge a fee for these extra guests).  He booked 2 months ago and he is due to check-in in 4 days.

Is it true that if you alter a reservation pre-check in it resets the cancellation clock?  I allow 48hrs for free.  Is it true then that if I alter his reservation to add these additional guests he will have 48 hrs to cancel?

I have no good reason to suspect that he's trying to get out of the reservation...except perhaps PTSD from March 2020 😉

 The guest can add the 2 guests himself  by changing the reservation. Will not affect other options.

After that you will receive the change request for acceptance.

@Jay503  It is altering the dates of the booking that will reset the cancellation window, not the number of guests.
