A HUGE thank you to Aminata, our amazing community manager, and to everyone who made our recent Airbnb meetup such a massive success!
Your unwavering support and active participation helped create a vibrant, unique, and unforgettable meetup focused on sustainable tourism along the stunning Kenya Coast.
This meetup was a beautiful reminder of the power of being part of a community. When we come together, we amplify our efforts, share knowledge, and drive real change. By showing up and supporting each other, we can protect this region’s natural beauty, preserve its cultural heritage, and create opportunities for local communities to thrive.
Here’s a peek into the magic we created together:
- Participating in a community clean-up and mangrove planting
- Empowering women to open Airbnb listings and share their village homes with travelers
- Visiting Mida Creek, a beneficiary of the Airbnb Community Fund through Arocha Kenya
- Immersing in Giriama and Pokomo dances
- and learning about the rich history of Gede and Mambrui Ruins
This meetup is proof that when we come together as a community, we can make a lasting impact. The work we’re doing embracing eco-friendly tourism, protecting our coastlines, and empowering local businesses matters more than ever.
Let’s keep building on this momentum! Together, we can create a future where sustainable tourism benefits both visitors and local communities.
Check out the photos from this amazing journey, and let’s continue to grow this incredible community!

Hi @Pam5 😊,
Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt message here in the community.
Those pictures are amazing, I can definitely see the genuine moments you spent together and the incredible work. 😍
What did you learn most from this experience?
Would you participate again in the future?
-----
@Elisa Thank you so much! It really was an unforgettable weekend, and I am so glad the photos convey some of the energy and spirit of the meetup.
What I learned most from this experience is how deeply interconnected culture, community, and conservation are here on the coast. Seeing firsthand how local women are creating sustainable businesses, how youth are engaging with tourism, and how conservation efforts like mangrove planting directly impact the environment was truly inspiring. It reminded me that as hosts, we have a real opportunity to contribute meaningfully to sustainable tourism while sharing authentic experiences with travelers.
and absolutely, I would participate again! The meetup not only strengthened connections with other hosts but also reinforced the importance of working together to preserve the coastal region’s heritage and natural beauty. I am already excited about future initiatives and ways we can continue to support the community and environment through our hosting.
Hi @Pam5 😊,
thank you for your kind reply!
I love how you highlighted the connection between hosting and supporting sustainable tourism. What was one local initiative or project you saw that you think other hosts could easily get involved with to make a positive impact?
-----
Hi Elisa,
In addition to our monthly beach clean-ups, one local initiative that hosts can easily get involved in and that truly makes a meaningful impact is supporting the community-led mangrove conservation projects. Mangrove planting doesn’t require any special skills, and by joining scheduled community activities, hosts can make small but powerful contributions that help restore our coastline, protect biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience.
What makes this initiative so accessible is that hosts can also share the experience with their guests by recommending visits, explaining the importance of mangroves, or even arranging optional eco-activities. It’s a wonderful way for guests to connect with both the community and the environment while encouraging responsible tourism.
It’s a simple yet impactful way to give back.
