Heard Mice In Building

Heard Mice In Building

Hey,

I rented an apartment in West London over the weekend and it turned out to be nothing like what I thought. Got there and on the second night I heard mice at night coming from the kitchen, where there was a hole in the tiles.

Tried to ignore it, and I did. Didn’t mention it to the host because they was just an awkward weird character and looked like they knew something was wrong with the property themselves.

Then on the last day, I checked out but took the keys with me accidentally. I ubered my friend back to the apartment to drop the keys off, he went inside to drop them off inside the property and seen a pest control letter on the table stating there was mice in the building, and that BAIT had been tampered with.

Pest control recommended he covered the tiles up in the kitchen, I have a photo of the report that my friend took whilst he was there. Not to forget the front door of the building was ALWAYS open, which made me worried for the safety of me and my belongings. Surely this isn’t allowed? Can I request a refund somehow through Airbnb? What should I do? I don’t want to speak to the owner because they took their time to reply before I even got to the place and they clearly KNEW this was an issue from the way the host acted when i arrived.

Attached is the pest control report which just literally confirmed what I was worrying about and PROVED I was right.

The Airbnb terms and conditions state that you must notify the host to rectify the problem, @Anonymous . I know you said you found him awkward and weird, but still, you do have to let him know.

Hearing mice didn't impact your stay enough that you got out. You did stay.

Given that, what would your refund be for, exactly? You didn't need to find alternative accommodation. You haven't mentioned that the mice ate your food.

It sounds like I'm not on your side, but I totally am. Staying in a place with a mouse infestation is awful. [Shudder.]

However, I don't see that you have a case because you didn't follow the protocol. What you can and should do is address the mouse issue in the review. You don't want other guests walking into that.

@Anonymous,

First, I am advising you to remove this picture, because it's not your document and it displays a personal address for a residence that is not yours, and you have not provided any proof that you were allowed to take the picture or post it online.

To whom are you proving that you were right? You had a chance to contact Airbnb during your stay, but didn't do so.  If you were so concerned about your safety, you should have left immediately.  It looks like you are now trying to get a free/discounted stay after the fact.

Don't just believe what I say, check the Airbnb Help Center

@Anonymous  You state you were uncomfortable and unhappy, yet didn't speak up and give the host a chance to address any issues, and continued to stay, so why do you think you have the right to any refund after the fact?? You also made a lot of assumptions about the host. Pointless and unfair. The proper thing to do was contact the host with your concerns, and if you weren't happy with the response and efforts to fix something, then contact Airbnb. And going back to the place to return keys...if this was after the checkout deadline, you were at that point trespassing.
