I still can't believe this.....lovely guests left a surprise in the shower.

Seriously, very nice guests. A mom and three adult (teen to early twenties) kids. She was lovely, communication was great. They left the cabin in really decent shape considering that 4 adults had stayed. They loved the cabin and had great stay. I had several very nice conversations with the mom.

So, when I went in to clean, I was really surprised to find POOP In the shower!! It was poop! Nothing else it could have been. Nobody had made an attempt to make it go away. There was also evidence in the toilet (without getting too graphic) that someone had suffered from some gastrointestinal distress.

I don't know about you, but if I'm suffering in that way, I'm sure as HECK going to clean up after myself. I still can't believe it.

I pretty much think that one of the "kids" did this and the mom didn't know. She definitely seemed to be the kind of person that wouldn't have allowed that to happen. She was very nice and has great reviews.

So I gritted my teeth, put some serious gloves on, and cleaned the bathroom.

I (of course) didn't mention it in the review, or in private feedback. There wasn't much point. I don't think they are serial shower poopers, and it would only cause embarrassment and weirdness. They said they loved my place and would be coming back, and I would actually happily host them. Maybe if one of the kids doesn't show up the next time, I'll know who the perpetrator was.

That's all. The end.

Hi @Kia272  Oh no, what a shock to find something like that in the shower!

Not only did I like the cool, calm, and collected words you used to not only describe the incident, but also the reasoning you gave as to what might have happened, but I like it that apart from that one unexpected event, everything else  at the cabin was left in a decent manner, and that the Mom and you had had a great repartee with each other.

I'm sure that in view of all of the above, the Mom would have been absolutely horrified to find out what had occurred, and in that particular case, I think you were right in not mentioning the offending item, especially as no-one had owned up, and no-one had mentioned the incident before they vacated the cabin.

The only thing I find strange (although maybe things are different in other families, or maybe in in other Countries)  is that if the cabin was that decent, the very fact of being so would suggest that everywhere had been checked by at least one member of the family, so assuming that that was so, how come the "thing" wasn't discovered?!

The only explanation I could suggest is that one member of the family had an urgent need, and - after everyone had left - they re-entered the cabin, and used the facilities, cleaning themselves before dashing back to join the others (maybe they having sounded  the vehicle's horn to hurry up the person?)

Embarrassment would more than likely have been the reason the individual didn't say anything, as I'm more than certain s/he would have felt terrible enough as it was, and to have admitted what had occurred in front of his/her siblings, would more than likely have led to much ridicule rather than sympathy.

You therefore handled the whole situation in the best way possible, and are to be congratulated.

I do hope that the Mom AND all of her children do return, and that once again they'll have a wonderful stay, although on that occasion it would be lovely if they left a different (but useful) present for you;  preferably the type we'd all love to receive!

@John2406 I like your hypothesis about the perpetrator reentering the cabin at the last minute.

Either that, or the last person to take a shower could have simply pulled the shower curtain closed.

Either-or, what's done is done, and the evidence is gone. It was not the most pleasant cleaning experience, but hosting doesn't come with any guarantees.

Cheers

@Emiel1 there is a sign I would never have thought necessary!

whilst googling for a waffle stomp i learned that 1 in 30 people (admit to) popping in the shower. how GROSS and disturbing, that's 3%, which is way too high. I'm always astounded at those videos of just awful awful people who do a poo only to throw it at someone (please don't google it, it's is srsly gross), usually in a place of business where they've decided to take offence to something.

@Kia272 I hate to say this, but "waffle stomping" is a trend with the idiotic. Its all over social media. Given the ages of the kids, I would not at all be surprised if they chose your space to try this out. (I made the mistake of looking up this term when someone said it. You don't need to. Just take it from context lol.)

Mom may have seemed nice but she definitely didn't do a once over before she left your cute cabin. If she did, well then she isn't that nice. This is far beyond what a host signs up to clean. I would leave a very appropriate review that mentions how pleasant the guest was until you discovered a great deal of abnormal bathroom clean up upon check out and that you do not recommend them to others.

@Laura2592 oh.....my. I wish I could un-read this, but I can't, lol.

I'm actually still giving them the benefit of the doubt. First of all, unfortunately, it was not in the drain. (I Googled- I couldn't help it) It was in the corner, kind of against the wall. Nobody made an attempt to get it down the drain....uggh.

But....in my favor, there was evidence- mentioned in my post- that someone had been suffering some gastrointestinal distress. Ya know....the toilet bowl was kind of a mess from- you guessed it- splatter.

Maybe I'm being naïve, and I do think it is totally weird, but perhaps not intentional. I mean, whoever did it knows what they did, but I'm going to go with the embarrassment factor and leaving it at that.

Hopefully I'll never have to deal with something like that again. I can only imagine that with a stay gone totally wrong, with bad blood between guest and host, that a guest could do something like that intentionally.

And I already left them a good review. As I said, I don't think they are serial shower poopers and something just happened.

@Kia272

Could be someone was on the toilet and someone had to go PDQ, and jumped in the shower.  And they didn't want it clean it themselves.

I sometimes wonder what happens to people that they end up with gastrointestinal problems, and farther more don't find it embarrassing to leave the evidence behind..no pun intended..I have a brush and plunger tucked in between a small dresser and the toilet, can't miss it, but yet it's not used.

@Wende2 I'm not feeling that scenario at all. I'd probably rather poop my own pants than poop in the shower with somebody on the toilet watching. Just saying....
