AirBNB Goes Anti-Semitic

On Monday, AirBNB, the home-rental company that is often used by tourists to rent apartments in locations around the globe, announced that it would not allow Jewish settlements to be listed in Judea and Samaria. AirBNB stated:

We concluded that we should remove listings in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank that are at the core of the dispute between Israelis and Palestinians.

This is the sheerest form of corporate anti-Semitism in recent memory. Not only did AirBNB specifically target “Israeli settlements,” according to Professor Eugene Kontorovich of George Mason Law, they’ve announced that they will only disallow listings in Israeli settlements when those listings are owned by Jews. In other words, if a Jew owns an apartment in East Jerusalem, that won’t be allowed for listing; if an Arab owns an apartment in the same neighborhood, it’s fine for listing.

This is absurd. As Dr. Michael Oren points out, AirBNB lists apartments in Turkish-occupied Cyprus, the Moroccan-occupied Sahara, Chinese-occupied Tibet and Russian-occupied Crimea. Not only that, but AirBNB allows listings in a wide variety of countries without any democratic rights and with wildly discriminatory policies.

Judea and Samaria are disputed territories, not “occupied” territories. Israel controls those territories thanks to repeated refusal by Arab states that repeatedly declared war on Israel to accept any peace deal. Radical Muslim anti-Semites and their left-wing apologists insist not only that these territories be turned over to the terrorist Palestinian Authority for control, but that Jews evacuate those territories entirely, making them Judenrein. Remember, this AirBNB policy isn’t targeting the Israeli government — it’s targeting Jews themselves for living in areas under international dispute.

Leaders of the BDS movement are explicitly anti-Semitic, calling openly for the end of Israel’s existence. The very notion of labeling Jewish products from particular areas for boycott is reminiscent of Nazi policy directed against Jews. As Alan Dershowitz writes:

The boycott against Israel and its Jewish supporters (to many Palestinians, all of Israel is one big "settlement"; just look at any map of Palestine) began before any "occupation" or "settlements" and picked up steam just as Israel offered to end the "occupation" and settlements as part of a two-state solution that the Palestinians rejected. BDS is not a protest against Israel's policies. It is a protest against Israel's very existence.

Still, the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement (BDS) is gaining serious steam on the mainstream Left these days thanks to the intersectional notion that Jews rank high on the hierarchy of privilege. Such thinking allows anti-Semitism to thrive across the world, and particularly in the Middle East. AirBNB’s latest move is simply the best evidence yet that the intersectional Leftist ideology has invaded the corporate world, and that anti-Semitism is perfectly acceptable among otherwise “woke” actors on the Left.

Daniel, it's funny that you think "this clears it up"!

There are properties owned by Muslims in areas claimed by Jews (and from which Jews were expelled and can no longer visit), yet Airbnb did not delist them.

There are properties owned by Jews in areas claimed by Muslims (and into which Muslims can and do return), and Airbnb delisted them.

The words "double-standard" would apply if this weren't racially motivated. But since the only distinction here is that the people being singled out are Jews, it's an antisemitic act.

The fact that some ("the good") Jews are still allowed as hosts isn't an argument against this being antisemitism.

@Melvyn0:

This is where you're wrong.  It's ALL listings in the DISPUTED TERRITORIES that have international recognition granted to PALESTINIANS.  While Israel is predominantly Jewish (82.4% to be exact), 14% is Muslim.  And while 93% of all Palestinians are Muslim, 6% are Christian.  You perceive this to be anti-Semitic.  It's not.  No matter what religion you are in this situation, you're affected.

All this AirBNB hypocricy while Israelis in the West Bank save arab lives there:

I missed this entirely.  The Daily Wire has a nearly extreme far Right bias, and has been known to misrepresent facts.  They are funded by the Wilks brothers, members of the extreme Right.  Be careful with those sorts of sources.

I am an Israeli American residing in Jerusalem and deeply disappointed by Airbnb going political, which is totally inappropriate given their mission statement and purpose. As a licensed Realtor, I manage properties for owners through Airbnb, however will no longer work through Airbnb until they resume to be a neutral business operation for tourists worldwide.

I hope Airbnb understands the impact of their business mistake and regains international public favor and trust by re-listing the properties in Judaea and Samaria immediately!

great news:

VICTORY IN AIRBNB LITIGATION!

AIRBNB rescinded its decision & settles lawsuit: It will return the listings of Jewish homeowners in Judea and Samaria to the site

This dramatic announcement comes in the wake of negotiations between the Shurat HaDin Law Center and AIRBNB in recent weeks to rescind the company's decision to delist the properties of Jewish homeowners in Judea and Samaria and as result of a federal lawsuit filed by the Shurat HaDin organization against the AIRBNB  on behalf of Israeli-American homeowners

Shurat HaDin Law Center: “This is a powerful defeat for the anti-Israel boycott movement. Other international companies need to learn lessons."

Dear Friends,

We just scored a tremendous victory in the lawsuit we launched against Airbnb!  The online hosting platform has agreed to completely retract its policy of delisting Jewish homes in Judea & Samaria.  This is an important and precedential decision in the battle against the racist BDS movement.

Over the past few weeks we have been negotiating a settlement agreement with the hospitality giant Airbnb to rescind its discriminatory policy redlining Jewish-owned properties in the Judea and Samaria region. That policy, announced in November 2018, had banned Jewish property owners in Judea and Samaria from listing properties on Airbnb, while allowing Muslim and Christian property owners to list properties in the same area. Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Airbnb has agreed to repeal the discriminatory policy, thereby resolving the discrimination lawsuit.

The plaintiffs, a group of twelve Jewish American families had filed a civil rights lawsuit against Airbnb in the United States Federal District Court for the District of Delaware. The lawsuit was captionedSliber, et al. v. Airbnb, 1:18-cv-01884-RGA. The lawsuit was brought in Delaware because Airbnb is incorporated in Delaware. In their lawsuit, the plaintiffs alleged that the policy of the San Francisco-based internet hospitality company discriminated against them based upon their religion.

Our lawsuit was filed under the Fair Housing Act, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 as amended by the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988, (“FHA”) 42 U.S.C.§ 3601, et seq., a federal statute which safeguards against discrimination in the housing sales and rental markets. While the properties were located in Judea and Samaria, the plaintiffs alleged that the discrimination was being committed by Airbnb, which is located in the United States and is bound to follow federal policies of non-discrimination wherever it operates in the world. The plaintiffs asked that the court enjoin Airbnb from discriminatory practices against Jewish homeowners and sought compensation for any lost rental income from Airbnb.

Airbnb is a racist, anti-Semitic company that discriminates against Jews from Israel. This can easily be verified by entering the search terms "Airbnb anti-Semitic". It also violates US laws and I hope they will be sued until they reclaim this disgusting discrimination!

The Airbnb management is misogynist and antisemitic and I do not want to deal with such bad guys as the billionaire and CEO of AirBNB Brian Chesky. I hope they will be punished for discrimination and get back the hatred they spread.

Why were companies like Noirbnb.com and Innclusive.com founded? Because we all know about the racism and anti-Semitism at Airbnb. They do it better than Airbnb and rule out discrimination instead of causing it.
Homestay.com is also a good, non-discriminatory platform.

Good that Airbnb had to take back these racist, anti-Semitic restrictions!

However, this will not change the sexist and racist sentiments of Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky and others in the management. We should all think about that before we send more money to this billionaire through the use of Airbnb.
