Hi Everyone, I am interested in listing my sailboat on Airbnb, however I am having a lot of trouble finding information about how to do this legally. There are about two dozen boats already listed in MDR, so it seems to be a feasible option, but I'm wondering now if people are mostly just doing this under the table? Any information from other boat owners/renters, would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks Theresa and Kris. I appreciate the honest response. I was assuming the marinas would take isuse with it, but considering so many people are still renting, I thought maybe there was a way to do it legally.
It is against all the Marina's lease - whether they are aggressive in enforcing it will vary. I know my marina is very aggressive LADBH. Liveaboards need to be approved by the sherrif with a seperate inspecation & there is a density limit of 10% granted permits - only ppl that are registered owners are allowed to stay. My marina has a 15 year waitlist for permits & again only the registered owner is allowed to stay. I have set up a lot of Airbnb's in all kinds of scenerios - this is one of the more difficult/illegal zones. If you want to monitize your boat perhaps look at partnering up with a charter company.
Do we have any updates on this? I attempted to list my sailboat in Alamitos Bay in LB but I got a warning within a few days. Now I have my eye on MDR because there are still a dozen or so listed there, so it seems that people are getting away with it. This is in contrast with Alamitos Bay where none are even listed.
As Katie said, maybe these are under the table or blatantly breaking the rules? Perhaps the reason we are still seeing listings in MDR is because it is more fragmented with different marinas within MDR. Alamitos Bay is all operated by City of LB so I imagine the rules are enforced more consistently. Therefore the key to renting out in MDR might just be getting a slip in a laxed marina. Any info/thoughts are appreciated.
