Insurance Claim for personal Injury to Guest

Can anyone help me with info re the following situaution:

I had a guest stay in one of my listings back in May 2016. The elderly lady got up in the middle of the night and had a fall and then needed to go to hospital. Just now I have recieved a letter from them requesting the name of  my landlords insurance company so they can make a claim. I rang Airbnb and the girl saud she had never had to deal with someone who had hurt themselves before! (?????) and was not able to help me. Can anyone give me any advice as to what to do please.

Awaiting a reply. Thank you.

Just refer them to the AirBnB web site?

David

Thanks for your reply. I will do that, feel a little nervous about if working out.

This is my worst nightmare! I don't know that Airbnb covers personal injury as I haven't read the policy carefully.

Ugh app posted for me. Anyway I think the policy does cover personal injury but I haven't read the exclusions. You should contact Airbnb again and email them a copy of your letter. They should assign you an agent to deal with directly.

According to this link, AirBnBs policy provides primary liability protection to hosts in Australia: https://www.airbnb.com/users/hpi_program_summary_pdf

Toward the end of that document, there is a link to a form to notify Airbnb immediately if you become aware of any bodily injury or property damage has happened that may be subject to coverage under this policy: https://www.airbnb.com/host-protection-insurance/form

She should have had health care insurance. Unless you are negligent and they can prove that you have an unsafe home you have nothing to worry about. It is best to not even offer any insurance information. Contact your insurance agent as soon as possible for advice.

Hi @Nadeen0,

That sounds like a murky situation. Airbnb do have liability coverage (limited) for these instances although dealing with them can be difficult (US Insurance in AU etc). Have you managed to wrestle a solution that is working for all parties?

Might be worthwhile having a chat with Veronica, she'll be able to give you a very clear understanding where it's all at and she's a superstar for advice and isn't pushy. I'm sure you've met her at a meetup or two in the past.

Find her contact deets via this LINK.

Cheers,

Paul

HI guys, I've just popped by and seen this conversation from a few weeks ago.

Nadeen, how did it all pan out?  I hope you have your own PL insurance. Your House & Contents insurer will not cover this.

I can tell you from experiece that you can't get a PDS out of Airbnb for their Host Protection Insurance:  I have tried repeatedly and got nowhere. They only offer you the info that's publicly available on the website.  That's not good enough for me I'm afraid.

Paul Hart has mentioned my name in this thread.  I'm a Melbourne host, and also an insurance broker specialising in Short Stay.

I have solutions available for the most common hosting scenarios.  Our most popular Landlord insurance has now been approved for Short Stay subletting (where a host is renting and then reletting a unit or apartment).  This is a client group that have struggled to find cover previously.  As with anything, conditions apply.

Please don't rely on Airbnb to protect you.  This is serious stuff.  Consult a broker for best advice (not saying it should be me, just make sure they understand the short stay market).

Tip:  Going straight to the big insurers is not the best avenue as their call-centre staff usually don't get it.

It's a jungle out there...

What happened in the end Nadeen?  Are you coming to the meet up on 8 March?  May be we can all hear and learn from your story.  I am sure people would be very interested, it could happen to any of us.

Hi Veronica. I am in the middle of working out what to do re insurance. I am interested in talking to you if possible?

Marisa.

Hi Marisa, happy to have a chat.

Can you call me tomorrow some time? My number is 0414 397 230.

Or you can email me at veronica@ceneta.com.au

I am going overseas on Friday but will be available Wednesday or Thursday for a chat.

Kind regards

Veronica

Dear Veronica,

I am an Airbnb host on the Mornington Peninsula and have read with interest the conversation in relation to personal injury insurance. I have renewed my liability insurance cover through a broker for this year however I am interested in comparing premiums in the future. Would you be interested in sending me your details?

I agree that insurance companies have no understanding in relation to short term stay.

Regards,

Sally
