Palm Beach County/West Palm Beach regulations

Greetings,

Just wanted to see if anyone with hosting experience would be able to provide info about Palm Beach County and also City of West Palm Beach regulations.  Taxes, permits, etc.  Your wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-E

you have to get registered with the state and county and pay your county taxes.  Airbnb will collect the state taxes.

I was going to post about this but I see this thread.  I just got an Email from AirBnB about this.  Very confusing at first but I’ve gotten the tbt number just waiting on the business receipt which I did go to the service center and they told me they would ail it in which to me made no sense. But if it turns out to be a hassle I’ll stop the AirBnB and go with a roommate.

As a host in Palm Beach County, you’re required to have a Tourist Development Tax (TDT) account and a Business Tax Receipt (BTR). Please make sure you understand the Tourist Development Tax obligations for your listing(s).

Once you get your TDT and BTR numbers, please hold onto them. Not having these numbers could prevent you from hosting short term stays in the future.

To help you with this process, we put together an overview of the steps below. If you have any further questions regarding your TDT or BTR numbers, or your obligations as a host in Palm Beach County, contact the Palm Beach County tax specialists at (561) 355-3547 or clientadvocate@taxcollectorpbc.com.

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

Step 1: Get a Tourist Development Tax (TDT) account number
Follow this guide on how to create a TDT account online. Once you create an account, a TDT number will be assigned to you.

Step 2: Get a Business Tax Receipt (BTR) number
Have your TDT account number handy to complete your Business Tax Receipt application form. If you host a hotel, motel, or bed and breakfast, you should complete this application form instead.

You can apply in person or by mail. If you apply in person, you should get your BTR number on the same day. Mail-in BTR applications may take a few weeks to process.

To apply in person, visit a Service Center open Monday-Friday 8:15 am to 5 pm.

To apply by mail, send your BTR application to this address:
Tax Collector, Palm Beach County
Attn. Tourist Development Tax
P.O. Box 3715 • West Palm Beach, FL 33402-3715

Does this affect our homestead exemption if we rent out from our residence?

I googled this a while back, as I was concerned about the same thing.  I read the ordinance that stated your homestead is only affected if you rent your entire residence.  If you rent only a portion of your residence, you are fine.

There was an update to this on Monday:

You need to have the TDT and BTR set up now. Join the Facebook group (Palm Beach County Airbnb Host Club) I made so we can all be on the same page with this. It looks like they are going to start fining people $500/day 3 days after the filing (Monday). That is tomorrow (Thursday).
