2 single apartments vs 1 larger 2-bedroom

I’m embarking on a garage apartment renovation and am conflicted and would welcome any advice—

we currently have a small one-bedroom apartment above the garage that does well on Airbnb. I’m trying to decide which is the better income producing scenario:

add another one bedroom where the garage now is OR

make a larger upscale 2-bedroom apartment by building a living space downstairs (current double garage) and the 2 bedrooms upstairs where the original apartment is now.

What makes the most fiscal sense?

It is hard to give any advice without knowing about competitors in your area, demand, and kind of guests coming in your area. And without any floorpalan. But, we have 1 big apartment divided in studio + 2bdr apartment and it is great. We can rent them separately or together like 3 bdr apartment.
