I live in Canada. My listing is in the USA, and we collect USD for the listing, and pay local state and county taxes in Lee County in Florida. We have our US tax ID numbers.
AirBnB is now tellling me we have to add our HST number or they will charge HST (a 13% Canadian tax) to our rentals? That makes absolutely zero sense. We pay US taxes on our listing. Is this really the case?
You need to talk to a reputable internationally certified tax accountant or lawyer for advice. It doesn't sound right, but maybe something to do with International tax laws. Good luck.
Thank you for your note. Ideally, AirBnB would state their position and have an explanation somewhere. It is not clear at all if that is what they intend to do, and some clarification would go a long way. I Could mention it to our tax guy, however it won't change or explain AirBnB's position.
