Local Tax Increase

Our town is implementing a 6% local tax on all occupancy, in addition to our 5.75% State occupancy tax. I suspect this will greatly effect many hosts in our area as well as depress real estate prices which the town relies on for their main revenue source. 

Does anyone have or can point to any data showing how occupancy tax is actually good or bad for towns?

TOT goes to supporting infrastructure, and it is not optional. Ours is 11%. We also have BID which goes to the Tourism Dept, to promote the region as a destination. That is not optional either. The Lodging Assn is seriously considering raising the BID to enable the Tourism folk to better promote. A survey of comparable regions shows that our TOT is on the lower end and we were surprised to learn that.
