I had a laptop stored away in my home and a guest stole it. It was hidden so I know they were purposefully looking for valuables. How do you get over feeling violated? I don’t know out of the 3 guests who took it. Is this common? I guess I give people the benefit of the doubt and assume they aren’t thieves. I’m less upset about the object and more upset at the violation.
@Allison302 if you rent your own home while you are not in town (even if you are) then make sure you ask for a photo ID from your every guest and lock in a separate room or storage everything you don't want your guests to use as well as all the valuables. A security camera in that room or storage is useful. Put away your documents as well.
@Branka-and-Silvia0 Yeah, remember that girl who read all the documents? I kind of loved her for that...
@Allison302 That really sucks. The feeling of violation is real, but it will fade. It's kind of annoying that over time we become - I don't know - more cynical? I'm with you on giving people the benefit of the doubt and don't want to assume people are out to steal things. I find that the higher the price, the less likely the guests will be light-fingered. So why not raise your price for awhile and see what happens?
