Airbnb Coronavirus Extenuating Circumstances Update - March 13 - US/Europe/Schengen

Today, we are announcing changes to our Extenuating Circumstances policy to better serve our community. The Extenuating Circumstances policy allows guests to cancel eligible reservations without charge.

Our Extenuating Circumstances policy applies to bookings in the following areas:

  • Mainland China
  • South Korea
  • Italy
  • United States

For reservations in the United States, Airbnb’s Extenuating Circumstances policy applies to reservations booked on or before March 13, 2020, with check-in date of April 1, 2020 or earlier.

The extenuating circumstances policy also applies to reservations of global hosts or guests who must change or cancel travel:

  • In order to comply with disease control restrictions implemented by relevant governmental or health authorities
  • In order to perform medical or disease control duties in connection with the COVID-19 outbreak;
  • As a result of flight or ground transportation cancellations initiated by an airline or ground transportation provider due to the COVID-19 outbreak;
  • In the event that they are diagnosed or suspected of being infected with COVID-19 by a medical or health authority.

The Extenuating Circumstances policy also applies to travelers coming from the United States who have reservations in the Schengen Area of Europe. The policy applies to reservations that have been made on or before March 11, 2020, for travel between March 13 to April 13, 2020.

We will continue to assess the situation and will provide further information as matters progress. We strongly advise all travelers to carefully review and select appropriate cancellation policies according to personal needs and the outlook on COVID-19.
