as @Sarah977 said, guests cancel last minute, even on the day of check-in and ask for a refund. Every host loses income when it happens because it is practically impossible to rebook the same day or just a few days in advance.
Hosts are heavily penalized for every cancelation even if it happens minutes after the booking is done and months in advance so hosts will always try to avoid it whenever is possible.
You should understand that Airbnb is different than a hotel and cancellation is the risk every guest should count on . Every apartment/room/home is usually managed by just one person or one family. If he gets sick or home is damaged and needs repair then usually there is no other personal or other spare rooms/units available to offer.
I am sorry it happened to you but believe me, your host had a good reason why he was unable to host you, even if you don't know what the reason was.
