Can a host ask for a cash deposit?

Hi, my friends and I have been asked for a €500 cash deposit when we arrive at our AirBnB and have been told we will receive it back once they have done a review of the property.

are they allowed to do this?

@Oliver342 Nope. This is against the AirBNB TOS. You can report the host by selecting "REPORT this LISTING" but the host might decide not to rent to you and wait for a more compliant guest.

I've heard that hotels and commercial agencies are allowed to take a security deposit in cash if they list on Airbnb, but small private host not.

Of course that would be true. [said with a sarcastic voice] Thank you for the clarification.
