Guest paying for the electricity cost

Do you charge them ahead of time or before leaving?

Costs of electricity (gas, water etc..)  should be included in the renting price.

If you need to charge it separately, them you must include in the listing why this is, what the price is and how it is metered. Then the costs can be charged  via the resolution centre after the guest has left.

But there is a risk you will not receive payment.....

@Mercedes69  You're a very experienced host with 89 mostly great reviews. I would have assumed based on this that you already figured out how to configure your utility cost into your room rate! 

But if you haven't, now is the time to do so. Take a closer look at your bills to make sure your nightly rate accurately reflects your guests' utility usage, and raise your rates accordingly if it doesn't.

If you want to be able to bill your visitors for utilities, Airbnb is probably not the best platform - that's something that only makes sense for landlords with long-term tenants.

Agree with the opinion that cost for all utilities including electricity should be *built into* the nightly/weekly/monthly rates charged to guests, and imo should factor in very generous usage. 

FYI, I set higher rates during winter (Nov~Feb) and summer (Jul~Aug) to factor in heating/AC usage.
