Is it to be expected when renting 1 room in a house with an ensuite, that the guest is in my kitchen cooking meals etc? I have had people ask to store a bag or so in my fridge, which isn't a problem, but I feel like I'm being taken over with these people! I'm scared to get a bad review if I say something! Is this something that is considered acceptable with Airbnb? I've hosted quite a few people since I started in March & have never had this kind of situation come up!
They also booked for 4 people & had 5 (but the 5th was a 2 year old) & I also had another guest book for 4 guests & turned up with 5 (the 5th was a 7 year old). How do people deal with this? We are in the country so water usage is very important to us in the summer, & children usually use as much as an adult due to the clothes washing etc.
Hello @Debbi1,
I totally sympathize with you and most of us have faced this situation in the past.
1) Reg. using the kitchen, since you are letting out a room in your house, guests can use the common areas like the hall to watch TV, kitchen to cook etc. I would suggest that if you aren't comfortable with guests using your kitchen, you should mention about it in the house rules clearly so that this can be avoided in the future.
2) Reg. extra guests, you have 3 options:
a. Say nothing and let it go.
b. Charge an extra fee for the extra guest using the Airbnb Resolution Center
c. Ask them to leave as they are more than the registered number of guests (Strongly suggest, not to do this right now as it's just about a 2 year old kid)
Again, please update your house rules and mention kids above X years or X months woud be counted as guests and must be paid for if not included in the reservation during booking, that should solve the problem for you.
I hope that helps 🙂
Thanks,
Jeet
There's always that first guest who makes us stop in our tracks 'Huhhhh?'
Guests have different experiences and ways of interpreting and preferences. Some love to go out to eat, while others prefer chilling at home and cooking the hell out of a host kitchen.
Your listing does mention kitchen in the amenities.
There was no other mention of it in the text to restrict that use in any way.
There is absolutely no 'standard' in Airbnb since all accommodations are different and every host has a different measure of what they want to offer and share.
It's up to guests to clearly set limitations and communicate them.
So looks like you'll have to just have to wait it out.
If they keep you from living your own schedule, then do talk to them.
Further, there is absolutely no mention of what is acceptable to you regards children in the house rules.
If you don't address the issue, even after the guests arrive, then you will never find a way of handling it.
The them of extra guests and babies, children have often been discussed in this community - type those words into the search box lfor past posts and host tips of how to best handle these cases. Some hosts accept kids for free, others don't accept them and others again charge for them.
If you've never changed a reservation to for ex. charge extra for a child, then search that too for all the tips.
