Host asking for passport, ID

Hello, I'm currently in Croatia with my family. When I arrived at the flat, the host asked for our passeports. He Just told me to not worry because that was 'safe' when I asked him. He brought them back 5 min after. Is it for registering us or something like that ? That might sound stupid but I feel concerned. I dont know if he scanned the documents. I dont want our info to be theft...

It is a common practice in Croatia. It is not only for foreigners, also the locals. The reason is the data is needed for registration at tourist office.

Thank you. In the meantime I asked our hosts as well. I didn't want to look rude by asking them because everything is perfect. I read about Croatia before coming but that's an info I missed.
