Hungarian Host Asking for Passport and Personal Information

Some friends and I are staying in an AirBnb in Budapest for four days. The host reached out to us asking for our dates of birth, passport numbers, and places of birth, among other personal information. Just wondering if this is typical protocol for Hungary? We don't want to supply this information if not necessary, for safety reasons obviously.

Cheers!

I think you're safe as long as they do not want your ATM PIN# It's typical in Europe to hand over your passport to a hotel clerk, so maybe their short term rental laws require hosts to get the same information. You do not need to leave your passport with anyone, but you can give them the info to write down.

i dont understand why YOU would answer this question, "you think"  .... "maybe".....  the point of asking the question is to get an answer from someone who KNOWS the correct information, what some random person from california thinks, does not really qualify does it.

@Henry527 In Croatia there is no prob about a id card because everyone must show their passport and it must be recorded. Standard{ Apparently ]I would have thought living so close to Europe or in fact being in it ,would have alerted many to this anomaly. H

@Henry527 Don't be so aggressive, your comment hasn't helped answer the question either

This is necessary for the hosts to be able to pay taxes. The government wants to know all the details about all the guests ever entering the apartments. When I figured this pain in the ass procedure as a host, I chose a less beneficial way to pay taxes, to spare the guests and myself from all the bull**bleep**.

Yes, it is required we keep a guest book to pay the city tourist tax. The minimum the host can get with away with name, nationality and ID number. The guest book itself asks for a lot more than that and it is highly annoying,

Do the information on the guest book, remain with the host in case of visit by council etc, or do they pass/submit them somehow, to a public authority?

Putting my "aggression" aside, did you find his "answer" in any way helpful?  I think we can assume the answer is no, so people need to be told in order to discourage that kind of pointless waffle, a couple of people gave me a thumbs up.  Certainly, being nice is generally good, but ask yourself, for instance, next time you get bad service and say nothing, are you actually being nice, or are you just scared.  Enjoy your Brexit.

Hi @Bianca130

in Germany also hosts are required to take down passport details of guests staying.

German hosts are not entitled though to make a copy of Your passport.

We are also staying in Budapest and they are asking for all the information- names, birth date and place, address, passport number. I could kind of understand that but they want the mothers name too, is that normal? Kind of sounds like they have all the information for stealing my and all of our identity!???

In Thailand it is standard procedure to take all the guest details on arrival and we as host have 24 hours to register the guest on a immigration web site, If we dont and the guest have a problem or accident we get fined by the immigration.

Even though most of the guest have just passed immigration at the airport.

Only ever had one problem some years ago where a woman was refusing to show me her passport,  If you dont show it to me then I dont let you in the property and this was 10-30 pm, I gave her the choice either show it to me or the immigration which do you want? She was arrogant from start to finish.

I am in Budapest now, this is day 3 of a 7-day stay. I see here this is common procedure and want to comply with my host’s request. BUT, he also is asking for a photo of each passport. That is the one point I am struggling with. Thoughts?
