Why cant I use the same email address for both accounts, we should have the option to both be a host and a client and use the same email address

You can use the same account (and email address) as a guest and host.

@Rebecca70 yes as @Cat8 says you can do. I have both my hosting and a visit to Spain this month on the same AirBnB account with the same address. The menu even comes up with a new "Trips" items showing your upcoming reservations as a guest:

Is there some error message coming up when you try to make a reservation as a guest?
