Gender Identity

Airbnb does not assign a gender identity to our users. We consider the gender of an individual to be what they identify and/or designate on their user profile.

  • Airbnb hosts may not
    • Decline to rent to a guest based on gender unless the host shares living spaces (for example, bathroom, kitchen, or common areas) with the guest.
    • Impose any different terms or conditions based on gender unless the host shares living spaces with the guest.
    • Post any listing or make any statement that discourages or indicates a preference for or against any guest on account of gender, unless the host shares living spaces with the guest.
  • Airbnb hosts may
    • Make a unit available to guests of the host’s gender and not the other, where the host shares living spaces with the guest.

The host was a male and it’s an entire building so he won’t share his place with us.

I want to know how it would go. And want to be updated if the host gets penalty.

Thanks for reading it and sorry for the unpleasant discussion here.

Hello @HeungBeom0

So, you were two males?

How do you know he decline it for the gender?

I have today declined a booking of a male called Seunghyeon from South Korea. The reason was because the dates weren't confortable for us. His actitude has been very mean...

@HeungBeom0  This is a discussion forum for hosts and guests, in case you are thinking you have reached Airbnb customer service and are reporting this.

But I would also ask why you think you were declined because of gender? Did the host actually tell you this?

@HeungBeom0   You have 3 very positive reviews and most hosts would be happy to host a guest with that history.  Why are you claiming gender discrimination?

Sarah & Linda, until HueungBeom replies to your queries, there is also the possibility the Host has a Strict Cancellation policy and thus legitimately declining a South Korean guest.

Hi accidentally I’ve posted it with my another account. My bad.

And the conversation went like this.

host: your group is man only?

me: man only yes 3 guys and it’s a work trip.

host: I can’t accept man only group. Sorry

I don’t accept men group.

So I’ve booked another place and told the host that It’s against airbnb’s discrimination policy. And i will report that. He said ‘ok.’

i still haven’t got any feedback from airbnb.

@HeungBeom0  Yes, that is clear discrimination. I would assume the host has had some serious problems in the past with all male groups- probably party boys who disturbed the neighbors with excessive noise and left a big mess behind them.

But definitely against Airbnb's policies if it's an entire place listing or even private rooms with same sex host.

Airbnb won't tell you, however, what they will do about this-they will probably contact the host to let them know this isn't acceptable, but they don't share that information, just as they don't share information with hosts about what they have done about a reported bad guest.

I find it an interesting distinction.

The host evidently does not discriminate against a single male, but does not wish to host a group of men.

Will Airbnb definitely consider it discrimination?

@Alon1 Well, I have no idea what Airbnb will consider it to be, you can never tell.  But if a place is listed to accommodate the amount of guests that @HeungBeom0 was booking for, and told him that, specifically referring to male groups, then I imagine they would consider it discrimination. And according to Airbnb policy, you can only specify gender for rooms in private homes where the host also lives, as you well know. The host would have been better off just to decline without explanation.

I agree that he didn't get declined because he specifically was male, but because he was booking with a group of males. But that's still discrimination.

What if a host said they wouldn't rent to groups of Asians? Or Jews? If a host has a place large enough to accomodate groups rather than just single travelers,  then specifying the gender, race, etc, of the groups seems like it would clearly go against policy.

re: 'you can only specify gender for rooms in private homes where the host also lives, as you well know.'

Indeed,.

What's not clear to me is HeungBeom's use of English, as he initially stated:

'it’s an entire building so he won’t share his place with us.'

So, Is it an Entire Flat listing or a shared space with Host?

In any case, what's beyond doubt, as you state: 'The host would have been better off just to decline without explanation.'

@Alon1  Indeed, a link to the listing would have been useful. But even if the host is sharing his home, the TOS says a host can specify the host's same gender, right? A woman couldn't refuse to host a woman, nor a man other males. Things could get tricky with transgender and all the others I can't keep up with, though.

I can only repeat.... this Host isn't discriminating against the male sex. He just doesn't want a group of men.

As I see it the underlying problem is  this Host is  extrapolating from his experience from one or more previous bookings to conclude it will be inevitably the same with Heungbeom's group.  It's similar to numerous examples on CC of Hosts not wishing to take bookings from particular nationalities, etc.

I believe it's imperative to evaluate every request on it's merits, which on the evidence seems to be easier (though more time consuming) with non-Instant Book.

So my guest sign up as 1 but have his friend with him. I have clean up after 2 people n pay the bills for 2 people. Not only that i could  hear several people at one time. Then he run out of toiletry,  u you would wonder why.
