I rent a room in my flat on Airbnb and my landlord is agreeable but needs to know about her home insurance as it is apparently not valid if a paying guest is present. Is there anyone else in New Zealand in this situation or does anyone know which insurance companies cover the Airbnb situation? And how does the Airbnb host insurance work in NZ? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer! Kass
hello @Kass73 & welcome to ABB Community Centre from up in the north of New Zealand.
If you use related keywords in the searchbox you should be able to see how it impacts on insurance in general terms with letting a private room in a home that is either rented or owned.
Am I correct you are living in the property when your Guests/ visitors stay?
Why does your owner think it's different in any way to home/ flat sharing when you have a guest/ visitor/partner stay?
It's no different to having say a Billet in your home.
Insurance companies need a wake up call if they are treating your owners differently because you are using a modern day advertising platform, use the comparison of looking for a job online instead of in the major daily newspaper!
It's time owners spoke up and held Insurance companies to account for discrimination and failing to keep up with the times of technology.
Vero (and their related companies) were very good to deal with when I was an AirBNB host https://www.vero.co.nz/vero-voice/protect-yourself-when-listing-your-home-on-airbnb.html
If you want to do short term rental, you need to get specialist home insurance for short terms lets @Kass73 This is something that you rather than the landlord will cover.
The landlord will also need to check that doing Airbnb will not invalidate their buildings insurance perhaps @Helen427 could recommend some insurance companies in NZ that offer this.
