Need more hosts within popular touristy spots to offer cheaper alternatives

Why has this service become more of a "get rich quick" mentality rather than assisting the fellow traveler with lower rates? More and more homes, establishments, etc., within popular tourist places/cities are being listed as much as the hotels there. Might as well book a hotel. No? It's hard to find cheaper alternative listings. I thought this service was meant to assist the fellow traveler with affordable rates so that they could spend less $$ to bed down and help in the high expenses of traveling to said areas? To the hosts that do provide an inexpensive alternative within these high priced areas, bravo to you!
