Obligations for personal belongings

Hi all. I am wondering what to do with my personal belongings. I am not worried about things being stolen or broken more about what air bnb requires. For example, do i need to clear out all closets? What about personal photos? Anything else I should consider ? And one last question do all payments need to go through air bnb as in if they stay an extra day do they have to pay that last day to airbnb? Cheers! Jody

@Jody5 I don't think Airbnb has a policy on personal items in an entire home listing (or at least I haven't found it!).   I have an entire home listing which belonged to my mom before she went into assisted living.  I removed everything that was valuable to me and/or had intrinsic value that I wasn't prepared to lose through theft or damage.  Yep, I cleared out the closets so guests could use them and I limited personal photos.  I kept a really nice photo of my mom so guests would be reminded that they were in someone's home.  Other than that, I reduced the clutter so guests would feel they had room to enjoy the place.

As for paying for an extra day......you are guaranteed payment if they pay through Airbnb..what else can I say?

@Jody, I don't know about a specific AirBnB policy, but I've seen it recommended that hosts keep personal items or those of value - whether emotional or financial - out of the guest area.

I've read many threads on this forum in which hosts have described instances of theft and breakage (and for which many were later unable to claim). (You can access these threads yourself by posting something like 'theft' in the 'search the community box'.)

Those threads prompted me to rearrange my hall cupboards so that all clothing and jewellery is now in cupboards inside my own sleeping quarters. I also had a lock installed on the door to the small cupboard where I keep my jewellery and years worth of family photos.

In the bathroom, I took all items that were on shelves and put them inside simple, cheap, and attractive white cardboard boxes from Ikea, which I placed back on the shelves. That way, if a guest happens to open cupboard doors on the bathroom vanity, he/she won't be confronted by an unsightly assortment of lotions, creams, and other sorts of bathroomy items. 🙂
