Prepaid electricity in South Africa for guests

Hi there. I would like to know how other South African hosts handle electricity arrangements when they have prepaid (pay-as-you-go) electricity meters in their properties. Electricity consumption can vary vastly from one guest to another. From one who uses virtually nothing, to someone who washes 5 loads of washing a day, uses electicity hungry appliances like ovens, and runs the airconditioner (or heater) 24/7. Does anyone ask their guests to top up their own prepaid electricity? If not, how do you include electricity costs into your daily price? Any examples, or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @Babett0

Just my opinion but electricity should not be left to the guest. If you concerned about it add a surcharge onto the daily rate but I wouldnt ever state that electricity is extra.

In my info card to guests I talk about the electricity crisis in South Africa and how we need to be aware of conserving, not that, that helps lol.

I have found that it is virtually impossible for overseas guests to negotiate buying utilities in South Africa.  I'm afraid the cost of electricity is yours.  If you provide power-hungry ameneties like heaters and air-conditioners, you will have to see that the electricity is topped up, and add the cost to your listing.

Hi there, Have there been any new decisions by Airbnb

owners regarding whether to use pre-paid electricity meters and have the guest pay this?
