My husband and I are relatively new to airbnb and decided to rent out one of our rooms after purchasing our first home to help with expenses while I finish my PhD. I've consulted an accountant to handle my 2015 tax return and he is saying that I need to register my "business" with the city of Philadelphia at a fee of $250 and pay taxes on my rental income. I declared my airbnb income on my federal and state tax return and am beside myself at all the extra fees I might now incur as well as being taxed twice on the small income I received through airbnb last year. I would greatly appreciate any feedback from individuals who have been renting through airbnb in the Philadelphia area.
