Reservation not honored upon arrival

We made reservations months in advance and when we arrived to the unit, someone else was already staying there! Host says that Airbnb didn’t inform their booking platform of our stay. We were left with nowhere to stay in an area that’s difficult to find lodging in. The room we found was significantly more than our original booking and 25 minutes away in a different town. Should Airbnb be responsible for paying for all this? They confirmed our reservation, send me all the check in information and now they don’t want to help with the cost of finding alternative lodging. What do I do with this mess??

You should have contacting Airbnb immediatelly, as the situation is a "travel issue" :

"No access to the accommodation"

BTW Was there not any previous communication between you and the host, like welcome or check-in / time of arrival messages ?

The host is probably using more than one platform and did not connect the calendars properly.
