Smoking in rental when not allowed

Smoking in rental when not allowed

Hi,

I have a room/apartment I rent below my main house.

The bath vents are somewhat interconnected. I can hear when the fan is on down there, I can smell cologne, perfume, smoke, etc.

Two young women checked in today. They are staying for four nights, including tonight. This is their second night.

As I am cleaning my bathroom I begin detecting the distinct odor of pot.

I have no problem with pot. I prefer it to cigarettes. But, the listing and the house manual both distinctly state 'no smoking.'

What should I do?

I had a similar issue with someone who smoked cigarettes when I rented the main house, not the apartment below. They left the butts in the trash and burned the windowsill.

The main mistake I made with that guest was I mentioned it to them when they checked-out before they reviewed me.

AirBnb did credit me $200 to fix the damage, but I got my only three star review which was in retaliation for asking for money.

For this reason, I am hesitant to say anything before review time.

Ideas?

@Stuart94  If I were you, I would have told them stop smoking. Some people really need to be warned before they can change their bad behavior.

You can write your honest review about the guest as well.

I had a guest smoking pot in the room. Even though there is no shared space I could smell it billowing through the vents. This guest then tried to cover up the smell, evidently by spraying cologne on the carpet. That made matters worse! I had to steam the carpet to get rid of the smell. Fortunately the next guest didn't check in for 3 days so the carpet got a chance to dry after I steamed it!

I learned my lesson. Just having it say in the online "House Manual" that no smoking is allowed was not enough. Now I have a "No smoking" sign (purchased from Home Depot) on the fridge and under the glass desktop. Other hosts have a WIFI password that's "NOSMOKING".

And just so these people don't book in the first place, mention at the VERY TOP of your listing description that there is NO smoking! Scare these people off from the get go!
