I am reaching out to let you know that on Nov. 1st at Cottonwood Heights City Hall I was told that Airbnb will be discussed. Mike who was the leader at this small house meeting for Cottonwood Neighbors said that the subject is a can of worms! There were people who were pro and con for our small business. I didn't speak up because there wasn't much time for the subject but those who did speak in favor for us were very nice, the other side course was stern about the subject.
Please call the City Hall and make sure if the subject is on the agenda, I will do the same. Without my knowing until the small meeting I went to our small business has been brought to the table of the Cottonwood City. Mike wasn't in favor for or against but did say that enforcing laws of Cottonwood Heights would be way too consuming for there are 100's of us.
I feel that we need to express the good this small business has done for all. They can't just single out one Airbnb person and target to comply so they have just let the can of worms just sit on the shelf. I think we can turn the lemons into lemonade.

Hi All, I have been running an Airbnb since May 2019 and having great success. It has been 100% positive. I have to shut in 30 days now after I received a citation from the City of Cottonwood Heights yesterday. I went down to the City Hall on Bengal and they confirmed that city ordinances prohibit Airbnb for single family dwellings where the owner lives onsite. I am devastated but, of course, will comply. My son runs his Airbnb in Raleigh, NC, and he gave me the idea to try it. He told me that the city of Raleigh also had laws on the books prohibiting "short term rentals" in a residence property but that the city let it exist under the radar and then finally changed the law to allow the Airbnb and other types of home sharing to exist. Airbnb and similar types of companies are not exactly "short term rentals" and many cities end up making changes to accommodate them. Maybe we can also work with our community to allow for it.
@Elsa46 Have you considered forming a Home Sharing Club for your area? If you are not aware of these clubs, please go to Discuss on this site and select Home Sharing Club. You can get Air BNB help is contacting hosts in your area. Good luck
Hi Linda, I did mention it to another who is in my area if she would consider partnering with me to do a home club.....just waiting for a few days before taking it on my own. I have been wanting to do since late last fall. My time has been full with a Union position that I have but things are looking better timewise where I could do the home club now.
The hall meeting is Nov 8th at 6 or 6:30 pm
Hi to you all. Some good news, 2 of us has requested to the Airbnb community to consider us a a leader for a Club Home for Cottonwood Heights. The 1st person applied 3 weeks ago and has heard nothing from Airbnb. I applied on Oct 29th 2017 and haven't heard a thing either.
Next is we gathered a few host and will be meeting at Whitmore Library on Nov 7th at 7pm to go over our thoughts before the Nov 8th meeting at city hall. If you would like to stop by we will be in the basment in Study Hall B.
Hope to see you.
Hey, @Elsa46. Good for you! When I started the La Quinta Home Sharing Club, it was at the beginning of this initiative so the response was quick. Now that this initiative is taking off, I would imagine you have a longer wait. Be patient. I think it is worth it.
Hi Elsa! Any updates on how the meeting went?
Hi, I went to the Nov meeting and I think there were plenty of people who showed favor for ADU's. Nothing was really brought out about short term rental which is were the AirBnb falls under. But alot of pros and cons came out for the ADU's. There was another meeting on Dec. 6th which I didn't get to go but did send in my email that I am for ADU's. Getting ADU's approved is important because next to be looked at down the line would be short term rentals.
Keep reading the Cottonwood Heights Newsletter. I am sure there will be articles about Dec. meeting. In the Dec. issue pg 5 mentioned a 2nd survey and questions about how people feel about ADU's. Gave a website www.ch.utah.gov to look at the responses.
Page 3 middle section stated that mentioned short-term ski rentals in residential areas had standard adopted for regulation. Nothing else.
Looking at page 6 of the newsletter mentions that there were 100 people who attended Nov. 8th meeting and the City Council and Planning Commission are those who will consider the ordinance over the coming months.
I would ask that you email your thoughts on ADU's to help in the decision that the committee is going to make. Just address it to the City Council or mjohnson@ch.utah.gov
Hello! I am just seeing this conversation thread. I was wondering if we are allowed to host airbnb in Cottonwood Heights? Do you have properties you are currently renting out or did you have to shut them down?
Hi I just stared renting my house in cottonwood heights on Airbnb. I had a few tenants so far and it’s been great. Does anyone have updated information on whether or not we are actually allowed (legally) to put our houses on Airbnb?
We are not allowed. Just stay under the radar...don’t tell neighbors . I say to my guest they are friends or family.
Dereck I am facing a court day on 1-22-20 for a citation for short term violation in my home. Airbnb wanted to deactivate my account but I told them no.
i set my account for 30 days of stay, I may have to change to 31i have to read the ordinance. I don’t think the court can tell me how or who can stay in my home for 30 days.
Hi Elsa, I'm interested in how the court date went.
Hi short term 3 and less than 30 days is considered short term and is prohibited
Hi Elsa I’m just jumping into this conversation but I didn’t see a follow up to how the court date went?
