What does the number mean next to the clipboard

On my iPad screen for Airbnb there is a clipboard with a number. When I click the icon I get the messages from my guests. The number changes. I would think the number would indicate number of messages needing a response. But thats not the case.

It is likely notifications

It means the messages you haven't responded to yet, plus the notifications you haven't dismissed as yet.  If you answer a msg, and you renew your browser window, you should see the number get one number smaller.
