I am a host of 7 years. Never has anything signifcant gone missing. However...guests recently asked me about leaving items in the room adn locking it (the room )does not have a key nor do I wish to put one on it. `I could provide a safe...but then I have to nail it to the floor etc and I don't want to do this. They booked knowing there is no key to the room. So what is the situation if their mobile phone i pad should go missing in this shared house? If they had a receipt and evidence of the purchase would htat be enough for airbnb to refund them the full value of the item gone? I would call the police to investigate it..but I live with 2 others..and it would create a bad atmosphere. I can imagine that some people are not past pretending to loose things and claiming even though this is a criminal activity. But lets say they did say something had gone..very often as i suffer adhd I think things have gone eg money or mobile as I can't find them in my luggage..for example but lets say a guest says the ipad is gone ..what is the procedure? Are they actually insured by airbnb? against loss or theft?
and equally I am insured against loss or theft in my house. I suggested they left valuables at home or wore them and brought a wearable money belt with them so as not to leave cash in the room. You can wear a mobile too put i guess its cameras and Ipads they might like to leave in the room and its worrying that one item could go missing and it could be a flat mate /or them and I would not know who had taken it. Maybe time to get a key...
i always understood that both parties were insured against loss or theft if reported and evidence of purchase could be found Air did say they needed photographs of items in the house to prove they had been stolen in the first place.
@Francesca18 It sounds like you have a living situation which really does warrant a lock on the guestroom door. Why are you resistant to installing one? Guests will feel safer and you wouldn't have to worry about you or your housemates being falsely accused.
Guest would be covered under thie own Insurance, their Home Cover or specific Travel Insurance. AirBnB do not sell Insurance.
Might want to check your own Insurance where you have guests and no locks.
