leaving cheese to get out of a reservation?!

Something strange happened with my last guests.

They self-checked in on Friday (booked till Sunday) but left the next morning without complaining or letting us know.

They wrote in later messages that they'd left because of a strange smell (and some other smaller reasons) but didn't want to mention it.

Now I'm afraid they will post a very bad review but I have this nagging feeling they 'planted' the cheese to get out of the reservation...

How do I avoid that?

The guest before them was a personal friend and my Sanskrit professor who insisted that he didn't leave the key on the door but below it and that he left NO garbage at all let alone cheese plus that he cleaned up the studio as a token of gratitude for staying there.

He left around Friday 12.00 and my friend co-host who cleans came right after them and cleaned up some more. He would have double-checked everything. So how did he miss the cheese in the dustbin? They are always emptied of course.

The guests arrived in the evening by self-check-in and didn’t contact us. We didn’t speak and assumed all was fine until my friend went to clean up after them, messaged them about the whereabouts of the key and cleaned up.

We didn’t know they hadn’t stayed the second night until into that conversation.

Had they called the Friday evening then everything could have been arranged there and then.

I’m afraid and don’t see any other way than that they didn’t like the place and wanted a reason to get out without paying?

But leaving cheese to create a reason?

The conversation points to them just looking for another place because it didn’t please them after the first night.

I offered to reimburse them the amount Airbnb pays me (100 euro) and they accepted.

What happens if they write a destroying review after all? That might very well be the cause.

Please advise!

Oh @Joel389

Why on earth did you offer to reminburse them? You did nothing wrong and most likely the guests were trying to scam you to obtain a free stay.

As you know if there is an issue the guest needs to contact you within 24 hours of arrival and give you a chance to rectify any complaint. They didn't. If it was just a matter of smelly cheese (it wasn't) it could have been easily rectified.

I don't understand your comments regarding cheese?

Now you are in a situation where you refunded them for no reason and could still get a bad review.

I don't know what you can do now you have agreed a refund apart from leave them an honest review and learn from the experience.

@Joel389

so basically they are saying it was easier to find and evacuate to another accommodation then to take a cheese and throw it in a garbage outside the house and open a window for 10 minutes ???
