AirBnB is constantly adding features but these don't trickle down to rural hosts.
The system will collect taxes and occupancy taxes for many areas but few rural areas. I have 3 listings, one in VA near Covington, and two in WV outside Shepherdstown. The system does not offer any support to collect the taxs or occupancy taxes. A simple extra charges line item with a percentage would easily do the trick. Some hosts in other areas have the feature but no in VA or WV.
Experiences are only in major cities. There are great experiences in Shepherdstown WV about an hour from DC beltway but the only experiences available are in DC. Many people travel to get out of cities and certainly most people traveling to Shepherdstown and Covington are not looking to do experiences back in the city.
AirBnB plus, only in big cities. I understand that it costs money to have people vet the homes but hosts are paying for this cost with the fee. Hipcamp uses contractors that stay at the location for one night, take pro-photos and get a $75 fee. Should a smaller organization be able handle validation and photos in rural areas so much better.
These and other AirBnB bias towards urban sites push travelers away from rural areas towards cities to the detriment of the rural hosts. Further many guests specifically want to get away from things and see the country, AirBnBs Urban Bias is pushing them to other platforms, and hosts along with them.
There are many other examples that clearly are invisible to non-rural people. For example the required inclusion of a TV in the Family collection. People that want to get away from it all and visit the country particularly with family want to CONNECT with the family in a real and meaningful way, not sit on the couch watching a TV just like they do at home. All three of our rural sites have games, puzels, fire pits, etc. many things for familys to do inside and out. It shows a basic lack of understanding of familys that a TV of all things is required for the Family collection, but also why people get away to rural (mountains, rivers, etc) sites. Yes WiFi makes since, many of these locations don't have good cell service and modern life makes it difficult for some jobs to disconnect fully even on vacation, but that is not the same as TV.
