I do not like the idea of my calendar being blocked out for 4 days whilst the last member of a group gets around to paying their share of th deposit, with no compensation for possible lost bookings & my cancellation policy doesn't apply! Which eejit thought this up? Can I opt out?
We rent apartments to one or two people, usually couples.
I was not surprised to receive a booking request from a guy saying looking forward to a romantic break in the Lakes with my girlfriend
However what surprised me was the girlfriend had to pay her share as he invoked the group booking scheme
I just received my first group payment booking - for a party of 2, but my cabin could sleep 6. It was all a surprise to me, I must have missed the notice about this "new" feature when it started. Does anyone know when it started? I am also unsure about how it fully works - like does the original request need to state the total number in the party - or could party size go up without my acknowledment? . . .and if they party size goes up (reservation request changes), do I need to wait more time to get a confirmation?
From reading what Air BNB states in their blurb after I accepted the booking, I find It certainly is a disadvantage to the host. The booking I just took was for about 30 days from now, but I would have been in stitches if it was for next week. Does anyone know if they allow this option for ANY arrival date - like 4 days from the booking request? I live in a seasonal tourist zone in a remote location and timing is essential when you have a vacancy. Weather changes and local events make bookings within the week fairly normal for me. If my calendar looks full, then I lose out if the group doesn't get their act together.
If anyone knows more about this, I appreciate the feedback.
As it turned out, I asked this guest more specifics about her plans and confirmed it was just going to be a party of 2. She offered to pay in full now (so she had the option of taking the group payment option off on her end). She did this and the booking confirmation was sent within minutes. Then it occurred to me, even though AirBNB now gives a 48 hour "free" cancellation for guests, this "group payment" option can acctually extend this to 4 days, with no penalty to the guest. Even a "couple" might use it for this reason. I suspect all they would need is to have 2 AirBNB accounts set up. Then at the end of the 4 days, they could still pay with one account (like my guest just did). It seems like all downsides of this option are born by the host.
By the way - I have years of experience in the Alaskan lodging business, along with booking my husband's 6 person charter boat. In the old days - when land lines were the only method of booking - I spoke to MANY "groups" who tried to coordinate 6 guys to go on an Alaskan fishing trip together. It was one of my pet peeve's then too. There was always one laggard in the group when I had to get several cc's to get all the deposits - like squeezing blood out of a turnip. It's one of the reasons I sought out a platform like Air BNB, to not have the hassle of waiting, and following up on a booking requests. I think this payment route will get more negative feedback from hosts. I hope AirBNB hears it and responds accordingly.
As a host, I would, at least, want the option to cancel an acceptance of a booking if I could not "wait" the 4 days for their group to pay . . . and not be penalized for this.
Hi Tina,
The group booking option is causing major issues for hosts who have listings near major event venues, it is being abused by "questionable guests" and the present AIRBNB rules are unable to prevent this happening. We are having to block dates when events are taking place just to protect ourselves from getting our fingers burnt. This was a solution I didnt want to take because it penalizes genuine guests, however until the AIRBNB rules are changed or an opt out is provided we have little choice. The host community knows how this system is being abused but BNB are always slow to react, hopefully with time things will be changed!!!!
I am just experiencing this group booking scheme, much to my dissatisfaction. I see in retrospect that there was an exit that I could have taken (but did not, as I did not realize what was going on): after confirming the booking, I got a message that there was a problem with the guest's payment method and she would have 24 hours to correct. As soon as I signed off on that, I received a message saying it was a group book and that they had 72 hours etc... I don't understand why it says 4 days in some places and 72 hours in others. With the current scheme of 10 days minimum distance, this "innovation" is truly demented and casts doubt as to whether there is an adult in control at HQ. Perhaps this is the downside of the possibility that a 24 year old can become an internet billionaire. It does not change the fact that the smartest 24 yr old is likely to lack the common sense of a grown-up (age range tbd).
I did complain via the help feed and got a very cordial response from a case manager. Though he told me I had not reached the office most responsible for adjusting this issue. Problem is: I did use the link he recommended; it was the one that led to him in the first place. Am I biting my tail? Is anyone really listening closely? Do they not feel in any way the threat of a competitor run by grown-ups? Can one seriously resist a multi-billion dollar payday? I doubt if I could, I would just donate 1/2 to charity and retire in a virtuous haze.
Sigh...
@Spruce-Acre-Cabins0 It actually gets worse. If after 72 hours they have not paid AirBnB sends them an email that they have 24 hours to pay in full or the reservation will be cancelled. Then once paid as you noted they have another 48 hours in which they can still cancel, so 144 hours/6 days you could be blocked for nothing.
I’m being blocked now for the 4th day from a group from India. To my questions regarding their arrival I got no answers. The guest has no reviews and no picture. Makes me uncomfortable
