Covid-19 rules in New Zealand (and other places with no local transmission)

I noticed a new requirement to agree to COVID-19 safety practices. Although I appreciate the need for the rules for a large majority of the world, New Zealand has currently recorded no local transmission of COVID-19 for weeks (and outside of Auckland for around five months). We are currently at our lowest alert level, with no restrictions beyond border controls and contact-tracing. A number of other countries and sub-national entities (e.g. Taiwan, Western Australia) are in similar circumstances. It seems excessive to apply the same rules to the entire world.

The cleaning rules don't really bother me, as they're basically what I would have done anyway. Maybe they're a little bit overkill here, but nothing too onerous.

The requirement for hosts and guests to wear masks and keep 6 feet apart at all times, however, seems very disproportionate here. Personally, it wouldn't really affect me as I don't tend to interact with guests. But it would be a significant drag for the kind of host who e.g. lets a private room and interacts a lot with their guests. In New Zealand, you can hop on a crowded bus to go on a crowded tour, then off to a crowded restaurant, all surrounded by strangers, almost none of whom will be masked. But you will see the most restrictions of any kind when you interact 1-on-1 with your Airbnb host/guest.

I suspect the most likely scenario is that guests and hosts will want to ignore the masking and distancing requirements. But given the potential punishments for not complying, I suspect some people will begrudgingly comply at the cost of a worse experience, and a few others may shift away from Airbnb altogether. Some malicious actors may see non-compliance as a way to weasel their way into a free cancellation.

Please consider altering your rules to be less one-size-fits-all.

@Helen427 Did you also miss the news that we are now letting PHD students in to finish their masters. As well as letting in those with specialist trades for those have applied for employment. I can cite you others if you wish.

You have to ask yourself why people got fed up with the Nats 3 years ago huh . 😉  We are a democracy and the people have voted 😉  but thanks for the tips .
I am all for anything that keeps our people and my family safe

 Ngã mihi and congrats to Auckland once again

@Ria16

It unfortunately goes back to the late 1990's and the escalation of the unregulated internet & digital age everywhere, including at the border.

Gone for now are the days when people traveled and spoke to and got you know through physical face to face human conversation that previously picked up on any potential issues at the border.

Too many things are done by AI / Digital without proper processes.

With the rise of AI/ Digital era has come fake documents which unscrupulous people use to break laws, right from the moment they decide to travel.

As long as corruption goes on in the world no county or it's border will ever be 100% free of problems.

No one Government is to blame for that.

@Helen427  I thought generally it was because people were apathetic and couldn’t be bothered to vote and the people that did were the ones seeking change.
Oh well we now have 1 new community case . I hope the poor bloke gets on the mend soon.

Stay safe everyone.

Hi Nick and everybody,  I have to say, there is no legal action Airbnb can apply if a guest or a host refuses to wear a mask. It would have been more humble by Airbnb if they had communicated "that they recommend guests and hosts if interacting to wear a mask". Living in Sweden the mask is not recommended for a number of scientific reasons. We follow the recommendations from The Swedish Public Health Agency and state epidemiologistan Mr. Anders Tengnell, a mask is NOT compulsory to wear not in public areas and not at home.

Hi Sandra et al,

We are not getting through to management so we will just not comply and it's probably bye bye Airbnb. We have some regulars but may switch to students who will have difficulty in the new year to find suitable accommodation with the current shortage of rental properties here in Perth.

Yes, some hosts will tick to comply as they rely on the income but there is no way Airbnb can check up on hosts other than asking guests.

It's been a fun time but all good things come to an end.

Completely agree with your comment @Henry431.  We've hosted in our home for 7 years and very much embrace Airbnb guests as part of our family.  I would understand to some extent if COVID was a major issue in New Zealand, but as i write, it is not.  To ask myself, husband, 7 year old and 3 year old kids to wear a mask in our own home as we host is crazy and i would not ask it of our guests either unless there was a COVID resurgence here.  Airbnb has played a huge part in our lives for the last 7 years and quite frankly we rely on our Airbnb income to help pay our bills.  @Airbnb we sure hope we won't be penalised for non-compliance given the current state of COVID in New Zealand.

Just adding to the conversation here that so long as there is no community transmission here the Airbnb conditions are unacceptable and I will be taking my business (two properties) elsewhere.

@Henry431  Totally agree with you. I also started a thread on this issue which now has 163 responses from disgruntled hosts. https://community.withairbnb.com/t5/Hosting/COMPULSORY-enhanced-cleaning-protocol-unrealistic-for-ma...But Airbnb management do not respond.

I recommend you join the substantial chorus on the original ‘Host update’ forum:

@Henry431 @Belinda55 @Alan1152 @Mike-And-Mo0 @Celia302 @Deb3137 @Marg11 @LaNetta0 @Ellika0 @Rebecca373 and others, have any of you had problems accessing your listings on your mobile devices with clicking on the "Not now/ later" prompt for Covid19/ Safety Option?

I clicked "later" & it keeps doing that "Rolling Loop" black dots with nothing showing up & in turn I now can't access my listing which is extremely annoying.

@Catherine-Powell@Brian

@Lizzie  am I in the Naughty corner???

ABB C/Services also couldn't find my details in their system when I rang them so I'd appreciate your assistance in fixing this up ASAP.

 I've also done ALL the clear cache etc and it's still zilch access ...

Thanks in advance

@Helen427  No issue accessing listings on mobile here. I keep clicking “later” in the hopes they’ll change this Nov 20th onslaught.

@ et al

I was determined not to comply but needed to send a message to this evening's guests who may be late and needed our keylock code.  Couldn't message him until I'd agreed to masks distancing, cleaning and sanitising. Wasn't sure if Airbnb would direct him and his parents elsewhere or even understand about arriving in Perth after today's 9 hours drive!

Anyway, WA will soon be back to interstate guests, returning Aussies and New Zealanders who have quarantined on arriving in Aus.. Then international guests from safe places!
