Dirty guests-how do you make them clean ?

I just had some dirty guests that I told from the beginning of their stay, and during their stay, that they had to clean up behind themselves, because I provided no room/maid service, and I don't charge a cleaning fee.  They ignored me, and dirtied up my apartment anyway.  Does anyone out there have a way to encourage filthy guests to clean up after themselves ?  Deborah

Handle it in your review. Did they previously have bad reviews? I always leave honest reviews as I dont a problem going to another host.

@Deborah103  I looked at your listing and did not see any house rules!  If you have rules, you should put them on your home page.  You are offering a very affordable space and that could attract guests that do not have the same idea of clean as you do.  Do you really like being so affordable?  If you added a cleaning fee, that would send a message to potential travelers.

Linda, what type of message would a cleaning fee send to potential guests ?  I don't know what you mean.  Deborah

@Deborah103  I think a cleaning fee sends the message that you are serious about offering a clean space and keeping a clean space.  I also have found it discourages a single night reservation which is not my preferred booking.  I also don't build the cleaning fee into the rental fee so I can keep my rate a bit lower.  Just my reasoning but might not work for you.

Whether you add an additonal cleaning fee or incorporate it into your nightly rate, you must have some allowance for cleaning. You cannot expect that guests will clean up for the next set of guests. In addition, some guests are excellent and will leave the place spotless, others less so - you balance out your cleaning fee to cover both eventualities.
