I need suggestions for a Garage Keypad Code

I need suggestions for a Garage Keypad Code

I needing suggestions on what to do for access to the garage with the keypad. I know that changing the code after every guest is not ideal. Are there any new devices such as smart locks for doors available for garage doors?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm still trying to learn everything about hosting!!

Thanks in advance!

@Monika343  Why is changing the code for each guest not ideal? You could program it the same as the door code, last 4 digits of each guest's phone number, easy for them to remember.

The keypad is the one with the garage door opener and has to be changed at the top of the motor in the garage and is pretty difficult.

@Monika343  Ah, that does sound like a big hassle.

I have received that suggestion earlier and I agree it’s a great idea 😊

@Monika343 I was just researching this yesterday, and it turns out there are a ton of "smart" options out there now, including some that let you add users for access at specified times.  I always go to Cnet for technology reviews and here is their article:  https://www.cnet.com/news/best-smart-garage-door-openers-for-alexa-google-assistant-and-homekit-siri...

Most of these "Smart" garage door openers do not support multiple users. In other words, it's not possible to assign a temporary code for a guest like you can do with digital door locks. Does anyone know otherwise?

I am in need of the same thing. I need to be able to remotely change the garage keypad code for each new guest.

I need to do the very same thing, did you ever found a solution?

Hi @Monika343 ,

Great question! We were faced with similar issues and here's how we handled:

- we installed a myQ system for the garage door access. This is a mobile app (not a code that is keyed in). And is ideally designed for garage doors but also works with door handle lock systems (we have ours connected to a yale door lock handle).  For reference, myQ is widely used by homeowners who want to allow deliveries into their garage and thus are able to open remotely or allow temporary access.

- for background, our home was built in 2004 and has garage doors and keypad from that timeframe. The garage door opener system is in great shape and so we tried to find something that would be backwards compatible and the myQ system worked. It requires WIFI so you may need to extend/enhance a WIFI system to cover a garage area.

- we were able to install the system ourselves but it would require some tech savy-ness.

- this mobile app allows you to give temporary access to each guest. No codes needed. Guests  just use their phone to access and it acts like an old fashioned garage door opener - just press the button. The access is based on the timeframe you dictate - so no repeat codes or overlap.

- we have been using this since 2020 and this has worked out great for both sides - guests and owners. Recently, we have found more guests are already using myQ for their own home  and thus the burden of getting folks up to speed is less and less.

- as a total aside, we are in a very cold climate and locks that use batteries don't function well in our winter,  leaving guests stranded at the front door. This system bypasses all of that and has solved this problem as well.

- in short, guests don't use the keypad, just the mobile app. They don't even need to get out of their car to access their vacation rental, they can pull straight into the garage, which is welcome if it is dark, cold, rainy, etc. And they don't have to fiddle with an unfamiliar keypad in an unfamiliar location.

Good luck! Wishing you much sucess.

I have been looking at the myQ keypad. I already use myQ to open/close the garage door remotely with the touch of a button - no code.

So you are not using the myQ keypad? Just the app - and you can give temporary codes to someone through the app?
