Guests who are bugged by outside bugs

Our cottage is in the mid-Atlantic on a wooded lot. In the summer there are bugs. In the autumn spiders sometimes try to get inside. Our place is named Firefly Cottage for a reason.

We have monthly treatment of the grounds during mosquito season. We treat the house regularly (professionally) for ants, flies, ticks and any other pests (I have only seen ants, but when we bought the place there was a dead mouse behind the fridge. It had been vacant for some time so not totally unexpected. Still, eeek!) We also stay there once a month ourselves, using the outdoor spaces so we are very familiar with how "buggy" it is or isn't. All guests are provided with insect repellant-- two kinds, two strengths. We point out where this is in the house guide but one bottle still sits in plastic and the other looks to have about a teaspoon used from it in the last year.

Every so often we get a guest who "can't tolerate insects." I do wonder why they would book a place such as ours. Not to pick on my California or West Coast pals, but they are typically hailing from such places. The last straw was a guest who drew us some pictures of how to enclose our very pretty porch so that she could sit outside but actually BE inside. We have no plans to do such a thing.  I mean, she is welcome to buy it from us and do her remodels, but wow.

I grew up in a similar environment to our cottage but it had a lot of insect issues. I don't think our place is "buggy" by comparison and we do out best to keep it managed.  I do think that some guests are very sensitive to this and not well suited to a booking such as ours in high summer. Has anyone come up with a creative way to address this?  I don't want to give the impression that we are awash in creepy crawlies, but hey, bugs happen.

@Laura2592 I am amazed you get insects in the mid-Atlantic. I didn't know they could fly that far.

I have this written on my listing. Whether guests read it or not, I don't know. But I haven't had any problems, yet.

"Maine is the most heavily forested state in the nation and that means there are bugs. Bugs are attracted to light. The front door opens to the outside and outdoor lights will be left on for safety. If the door is open for long periods of time, bugs can and will fly in."

What it really means is: "There are no bugs in the space before the door opens. It's up to you to keep them out."

lol yeah I used to tell my guests not to leave lights on thru the night because it will bring the bugs in. they never listened. I don't worry about it anymore and touch wood nouns ever mentioned it, and I get all kinds of bugs, and killer mosquitos and gnats and midges like you wouldn't believe by the water. I leave tons of insect repellent out and it always gets used.

on that note I know when an American stays they are gonna complain about my place, they are not tough like the Aussies lol

@Laura2592  You’re in the woods!  How much you wanna bet these same complainers describe themselves as environmental activists?

I’ve had people tell me there are too many mosquitos outdoors; others who have gently reprimanded me for using a toxic substance to get rid of them.

I have a line in the house manual about how a bug might decide to die in the bathtub after the cleaning people have left.  “Please forgive us for this. Mother Nature is the ultimate authority on Caterpillar Hill.”

That kind of reminds them of the choice they’ve made to be out in Nature.  Haven’t had any complaints lately.  Never say never though!

I put a section in my house rules:

-----------

BUGS

We live in a warm climate and can be ants and other bugs.  The community and our cleaners regularly exterminate, but it is possible you will see some insects outside or inside the apartment.  We leave insect spray and ant traps, if there is none left, please go to the supermarket (300 meters away) and buy some, we will reimburse you.  Finding an insect or bug is not a reason for a refund or to cancel your reservation.

---------

Also, I have antennae out for unreasonable guests and prefer to err on the side of caution; if anyone told me that "they don't tolerate bugs" during our pre-stay correspondence, I would try to find a way for them to cancel and book elsewhere.
