@Helen3 Sound advice.
.....
in 1999, 20 years ago now, I started our first web site and started selling online.
We used every gag in the book, black hat and white hat to "game" the SEO, and we had ten very good years, 05 to 15 dominating the first two pages of google and every other search engine with a dozen web sites.
I thought I was an SEO god LOL. Had to take on more staff to fulfil the orders, then Google changed from a search engine to an advertising company and the algorithms got smarter than we were.
No more free ride. By about 2015 we couldn't game the system any more. They were one, two three steps ahead. And by now my smartphone was smarter than I was.
By 2016 we'd been penalised by google. Vanished from search completely. Staff went from 7 to 2, By 2017 we had to sell our old house to pay the VAT bill and now we are on Airbnb to help make ends meet 😬
Incidently I also lost a good customer - Google London.
It doesn't take ten years any more to catch someone out who is gaming the SEO.
All started with exchanging links arrangements on forums and ended in tears
Reciprocal links didn't just start cancelling each other out, they started to devalue your rankings, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that reciprocal wish lists and FB posts might do the same at the drop of a hat should Airbnb see fit. Airbnb are a tech company, they are not daft. And for most of these tech guys it's a matter of pride not to be gamed by us plebs. We get away with it while it suits them.
Just a personal observation, but having been there and being bitten back by the system, I wouldn't risk it either.
I stick to Airbnb guidelines and the tools they give us to promote our business elsewhere and the bookings are streaming in.
Oh, and it easier and doesn't eat up all my time.
Would I do it all again? for our, yea. If it was 1999 but I'd have a plan B this time. Who knew those hippies in garages in silicon valley would turn out smarter than we thought
On Airbnb, playing their rules, not gaming their system. 260% higher than their median bookings rate and over 300% higher value bookings than median for the area. A spare room in a house. With dogs. Go figure 🤷
