Male Hosts Discriminated against by Female Guests?

I came across a study online that polled 2,000 American's. It shows that, interestingly, 66% of females would only book with Female Hosts which intuitively makes sense. Since females often feel safer with another female.

I decided to look into after realizing that the majority of my bookings especially those in my own home where I live with my wife came from males. I noticed this when telling my wife how I found males leave the dullest and shortest reviews. And then it hit me that I should look this up and see if there is a reason I was not getting female guests in my home. I host other properties but the one I took extra notice of is the home where we live and have a guest house. I should note that this guest house is fully private (no shared accommodations). They have their own private door with code. Often times, I don't even see the guests since it's a separate part of the home and the entrance is about 30 feet away from my entrance.

After reading this study, I added my wife into my profile and profile picture. My wife does actually host with me but I never had her in my profile picture or description. Should be interesting to see what difference this makes. I think it will make a big difference.

To all the male hosts out there, think this through carefully and ask yourselves if you notice that the majority of yours guests are males. If so, you are potentially losing out on a lot of bookings.

@Sean433

I have often thought about getting a beard for business purposes.

"June Cleaver and I would love to have more females stay here"

But I don't want females who are uncomfortable with a male host.

Works well for me.

Hasn't affected me, so maybe it's more about Americans than women in general. I'd say 60%+ of my guests are single females, or female friend duos. We're gay (it's only me in the pic) but I can't imagine women have the time to search through listings to find a gayer.

@Sean433 I host a private room in my home for 1 guest and I get both male and female guests (I'm female). Some of my solo traveler female guests have said they look for places with female hosts, or couples. I think it's a good idea for male hosts without a female partner to say something prominently in their listing description and profile about how they fully respect all guests' privacy, regardless of sex. It certainly can't hurt.

But I'd not like to see what one guest posted here become a trend- the host photo was of a female with a gender-neutral name. The host turned out to be male. He had intentionally misrepresented himself so single females wouldn't be wary. I don't know how he thought he'd get good reviews when they arrived to find out he deliberately misled them.

How has this worked out? Are you booking more?

Not really, the requests I am getting from is still mainly males. To test this hypothesis out, I just acquired 3 more listings and my wife posted them on her new account. She will be hosting it as I have too many on my plate now.

The funny thing is all the messages she received thus far were from females meanwhile I am barely getting any inquiries from females despite having a picture of us together and my profile stating that I host together with my wife.

Kind of frustrating.

This is 100% true... My business partner who is a male gets far fewer bookings then me for the same properties.

I don't know if its a good idea to have a pic. with female and male while renting out as a single man. Maybe a bit deceiving especially if it would be a shared home.

@Kira32  That would be very deceitful and I don't think anyone here has suggested that. Just that if they are married or have a live-in girlfriend, that they include her in the photo.

Hola @Sarah977

So true, it would be wrong. I haven't met anyone that includes a female in their picture even if it's very tempting to do so.

It looks like this is something specific for the USA/Canada  STR market.
