No alert appears for new messages

I am no longer getting a notice that I have an unread message in my inbox. Previously a number would appear in red above the inbox which showed how many unread messages I had and the unread messages would appear in bold. Now neither of these is happening and I have no way of knowing if I have any new messages other than going through all my "read" ones. Has anyone else run into this problem? How did you fix it?

I recently lost potential visitors because I was not notified quickly enough. I now have to check my messages daily to make sure I keep updated with responses
