I feel like i am being unfarely judged in some of my reviews .... things that i have no control over and really are not any of the guests buisness. All guests know that i live on property. All guests know that my dogs live on the property. Guests should realize that I LIVE HERE well before they get here. That means, i have friends coming by, i have work to do, i have projects going on. I have neighbors stopping by ..... I HAVE A LIFE ..... i mean wtf .... being judged through a review and rating on stars AFTER the fact and AFTER their stay is weak ass people being passive agressive. I am friendly. I am approuchable ... you can see that in ALL my reviews, that includes the ones with low stars ..... if they have a question or conern ASK ME while here .... not rate me poorly .... UGH!!!
anyone else agree?
I definitely agree, and from what I've read on this forum guests can be extremely strange in wishful thinking!
My own listing clearly describes the set-up of my home and the tent-like curtains separating the guest space from the rest of the upstairs, as well as the 4 flights of stairs from grount level, plus enough pictures to get the idea across.
Here and there, depending on what guests write in their message, I point out they should read the listing description to know what's offered and what not, and so they know what to expect.
I've been lucky so far that I haven't had much strangeness in expectations. However, after hosting for 2 yrs I recently (finally?) had my first guest who mentions the luggage schlepping on the stairs (!) and that the curtains are 'strange'. Well, what did she expect?? !! and what would she expect me to do??
At least she made the comment in the private part of the review ("What do you think the host could do better?" but dinged me with sparse star-ratings.
For a while I guess I'll copy-past a text to my guests before accepting requests to the soumd of "You do realize that you have to get your luggage up 4 flights of stairs? (although I will help you). And you also realize that the space is sectioned off by a thick tent-like curtain and not a wall? And that I work from home? I want my guests to be satisfied, so if you hadn't realized or want that, it would most probably be in your own interest if you cancelled your booking request."
Good luck
All sorts of reasons why people leave stars the way they do, one person mentioned that they had a guest who thought one was the highest...
Do not over focus, no need to read the reviews if you do not want to.
I know this is a post from March....but I have been been quite astonished by WHAT people are commenting on in their reviews that are really not constructive. Lucky that we have had almost all 5 stars so far, but I worry about what people are saying publically, such as"
-Spiders being in the basement...um, they are EVERYWHERE
-Refridgerator is noisy for person sleeping on futon in living/kitchen area (they could have turned the fridge off or ask us - but it's not any louder than any fridge!)
-Not being able to shave their legs in the shower...it's a full stand up shower with a picture on our page
-Complaining that there was no chair to put their toddler's traveling high chair, although check in with EVERY guest and ask WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED? (this could be easily rectified!)
-Complaining about not having a table or desk in the space for a laptop (there is a coffee table) - but then stating that they knew there was none, but just saying it (again, to the public not private area)
I am new to this, so I am probably just anxious about ALL the reviews and how we come across to potential guests, but I feel a lot of their comments are uncessary? The futon being uncomfortable has been heard (it's new and not broken in yet, but firm, and I understand not great for lounging around - so glad we know now!)
I just got a mediocre review because the guest didn't like my neighbors smoking which smelled up the corridor. I explained to him that its not in my control and if you live in a high density condominium building, just by sheer proximity, residents' lives are bound to interact.. I explained that I can't control what the neighbors do and we really have to try to coexist peacefully. but he took it a step further and called security on my neighbors. sigh. what a mess.
So needless to say he left me a medicore review which I'm taking really hard cuz I'm a new host. So it's really comforting to see other hosts in the same position as me. Thanks all for sharing. I am still learning to take it with a grain of salt.
